A's add Weems, bring 14 pitchers into ALDS

October 5th, 2020

With no days off between games for the American League Division Series at Dodger Stadium against the Astros, the A’s have added an extra pitcher to their roster.

The A’s are carrying 14 pitchers on their ALDS roster, adding right-hander to the group of 13 pitchers that were available for Oakland’s Wild Card Series win over the White Sox.

Weems was one of the best feel-good stories of 2020. Drafted in 2011 by the Red Sox, Weems converted from catcher to pitcher in ‘16. Joining the A’s in 2020 Spring Training a longshot to make the club as a non-roster invite, the right-hander did enough to impress Oakland both in Spring Training and Summer Camp with a nice mix of pitches that included a changeup, slider and curveball to go with a fastball that approaches triple digits on the radar gun. Weems made his Major League debut on July 28 against the Rockies and had nine appearances out of the A’s bullpen, posting a 3.21 ERA with 18 strikeouts over 14 innings.

“It was tough not having him in the first round,” A’s manager Bob Melvin said. “Five games in a row, we’ve talked about the potential of using the bullpen that much more. It’s nice to have a lot of pitching, and reward a guy like Jordan, who has pitched really well for us.”

Weems replaces from the Wild Card Series roster. A Rule 5 Draft pick by the A’s last offseason, Machín’s versatility proved to be helpful as they dealt with injuries to and during the season.

“It’s tough to leave him off,” Melvin said of Machín. “[Nate] Orf is a terrific defender in his own right and probably a little faster. It was close. It comes down to some minuscule things at times. Maybe a little bit more on the end of the defense and the run dynamic.”
