Oregon State's Madrigal suffers hand fracture
Draft prospect Hankins dealing with muscular injury; Gingery to undergo surgery
February 25th, 2018

Oregon State second baseman Nick Madrigal is expected to miss three-to-six weeks with a hairline fracture in his hand, a source confirmed to MLB.com. FanGraphs' Kiley McDaniel was first to report Madrigal would miss an extended period of time. Madrigal is one of three Top 50 Draft prospects to suffer an injury over the past two weeks along with Texas Tech left-hander Steven Gingery and high school right-hander Ethan Hankins. Madrigal, who is MLB Pipeline's No. 11 Draft prospect, injured his wrist sliding into home plate in the eighth inning of Friday's contest against the Buckeyes. He was taken for an X-ray following the game and was examined by team doctors once he returned to Corvallis, Ore. The junior infielder was batting .560 with two home runs and eight RBIs in six games for the Beavers in 2018. He was a force on offense for OSU as a sophomore in 2017, batting .380 with 20 doubles, four homers and 40 RBIs in 60 games. Madrigal was selected in the 17th round by the Indians in 2015, but did not sign. Gingery suffered a torn ulnar collateral ligament during a start against Maine last Saturday. He was pulled after just 19 pitches and will require surgery. The junior ace, who is No. 50 on the Draft list, will miss the remainder of the 2018 season after going 10-1 with a 1.58 ERA in 15 starts last year. Hankins, a potential No. 1 overall pick in June, appears to have escaped a major injury, per MLB Pipeline's Jim Callis. Callis reports he avoided a tear in his shoulder and instead is dealing with a muscular issue that will require "some physical therapy for a couple of weeks."
Good news on Ethan Hankins, potential No. 1 overall @MLBDraft pick. No tears in shoulder, just a muscular issue that should clear up with some physical therapy for a couple of weeks. Left his Saturday start after about 15 pitches, fastball was down to 86-94 that day.
