Injured Jones, Hardy miss opener vs. Rays

Outfielder still has sore rib cage; shortstop dealing with calf tightness

BALTIMORE -- Adam Jones and J.J. Hardy both missed the Orioles' 6-1 win over the Rays on Friday, with Jones -- who didn't play Thursday -- still dealing with rib-cage soreness and Hardy coming down with calf tightness.
"[I feel] a lot better than yesterday. Just going to make sure that it's right," Jones said on Friday before the game. "Take another day and see how it feels. It's April 8. Obviously, I want to be out there with my men, but [Joey] Rickard and [Nolan] Reimold looked really good last night, so let this thing heal up right, and I think tomorrow or Sunday, I should be a lot better."
Hardy, who was replaced at shortstop on Friday by Manny Machado, initially felt his calf tighten up during a run right before Thursday's rain delay.

"He was out running around some before. I just kind of made the decision we're going to back off it today," manager Buck Showalter said. "Also with the weather tomorrow, to have the potential to potentially have two days. You want to take advantage of that."
Jones, who was adamant Friday that the ailment was not an oblique injury, wasn't sure when he first felt it -- just that it was something he's never dealt with before. Showalter said he first noticed it during Jones' eighth-inning at-bat on Wednesday against the Twins.
"It's the only thing I do really ferocious. I think I need to tone down swinging out of my [behind]," Jones said. "Just swinging at better pitches. You swing at better pitches and make contact off good pitches, then you don't have to worry about things like this. Extending myself and going out of the zone, those are the things that cause all these unfortunate injuries."
Jones doesn't have any plans for further tests right now, and he said he's still available off the bench on Friday, if needed.
"Oh, for sure, I can play tonight -- but it's April instead of September," Jones said.
