LOS ANGELES -- Manny Machado's mammoth home run proved the difference in the Orioles' 4-1 win over the Dodgers on Tuesday night, a victory that snapped a season-worst five-game losing streak.
"Believe me, I got that they are grinding," Orioles manager Buck Showalter said of his club's recent struggles. "Trying to not be Captain Obvious. We knew getting to this 16-of-19 [games on the road] spot was going to be a challenge. Just like the season we already played. When you start throwing out everything guys have done to get you to this point, you are going to send a bad message."
Kenta Maeda, who struggled with efficiency throughout his four-plus innings pitched, allowed Adam Jones and Hyun Soo Kim to reach base to lead off the fifth inning. With Machado up, Maeda hung a 75-mph curve that Machado promptly turned into his 19th home run of the year and a 4-1 lead for the O's. Pedro Baez came in and threw a perfect inning of relief, but the damage was done.
Baltimore had a runner in scoring position in every inning Maeda was on the mound, but the damage had been limited to one run until that fifth inning.
"From the first inning on, it just seemed like Kenta was laboring tonight," Dodgers manager Dave Roberts said. "Couldn't locate the fastball, couldn't get it on the righties. That fastball location was just a bit off. There were some good sliders, but it seems like at some point they were waiting him out."
O's starter Chris Tillman turned around a string of bad starts with a seven-inning, one-run performance. Entering the game, the right-hander had allowed a total of 14 runs in his last three times out. All-Star O's relievers Brad Brach and Zach Britton finished the job with two scoreless innings, striking out five and allowing just one hit.

MOMENTS THAT MATTERED
Macho Machado: Machado, who turns 24 on Wednesday, showed there's no doubt about his selection as the American League All-Star team's starting third baseman. His blast went an estimated 453 feet and gave the Orioles a three-run lead they'd never relinquish.
"He got one of the few mistakes, curveball instead of the slider, I believe," Showalter said. "Manny had a lot of good swings. A lot of guys get robbed by a great play their center fielder has made, they think 'Woe is me, not going to be my night.' Manny, he's handled it very maturely the ups and downs of a Major League season."
Seager streaking:Newly minted All-StarCorey Seager didn't take much time to extend his league-leading hit streak, hitting a double in the first inning. He has hit safely in 18 straight games, the longest streak in the National League this season and tied for the second-longest by a rookie in Dodgers history, matching Bill Sudakis' 1969 streak and only behind Tommy Davis' 20-game run in 1960.

Tillman steps up: With a rotation ERA of 7.91 in the past seven games, the Orioles' Opening Day starter gave Baltimore just its third quality outing in 10 games. Tillman went seven innings and held the Dodgers to one run in the first inning. The righty gave the O's bullpen a badly needed light night and cruised for most of the evening.
"You know what, we try to go out and get deep in the game every time," Tillman said. "There is no question to it. It's been a rough go here recently, but it was good to come out on top."

Puig shows off the arm: It's been a trying season for Yasiel Puig, but one thing that hasn't changed is the right fielder's arm. With two men on in the second inning, Puig had a fly ball land in front of him then immediately gunned it to second, throwing out Matt Wieters for the rarely seen 9-6 forceout.
The bat might be catching up for Puig too. While he was hitless Wednesday, he did draw a pair of walks to improve his on-base percentage to .451 in 14 games since returning from the DL.

Dodgers:Bud Norris will take on a team he won a division title with in 2014, as the right-hander gets the start against the Orioles in his second time out with Los Angeles. First pitch is an early one, scheduled for 12:10 p.m. PT.
