BALTIMORE -- Joe McIlvaine has returned to the Orioles as senior advisor, player personnel, the team announced Friday. He will advise the executive team at the Major League level and on scouting, with a strong focus on this year's Draft.
McIlvaine, who most recently spent four years as the special assistant to the general manager for the Mariners, got his start as a territorial scout for Baltimore from 1974-76.
After that, McIlvaine built an impressive resume.
McIlvaine spent a decade (November 1980 to October 1990) with the Mets, taking on an array of roles that included director of scouting, director of player personnel and vice president of baseball operations. During his tenure, the Mets finished either first or second in their division, won two National League East titles, and won the 1986 World Series.
He was executive vice president of baseball operations and GM of the Padres from 1991 to 1993, before returning to the Mets as executive vice president of baseball operations from 1993 to 1997. He was a special assistant with the Twins from 1998 to 2012.
