SEATTLE -- Orioles shortstop J.J. Hardy, who is on the 60-day disabled list with a fractured right wrist, hit in the indoor cages on Wednesday and played long toss. He hopes to take on-field batting practice on Friday.
"I'm hoping that we're going to get into the hitting part of it soon. I know he's been taking a lot of dry swings," O's manager Buck Showalter said. "He's ready to get going. He's antsy about getting going. We sure would like to get him back."
Hardy has been sidelined since June 19, and he hit .211/.248/.308 in 64 games before heading onto the DL. The Orioles acquired Timothy Beckham from the Rays at the July 31 non-waiver Trade Deadline to fill in as the club's starting shortstop. He's been a dynamic presence at the top of the lineup since being acquired, entering Wednesday hitting .484/.500/.855 with seven doubles, two triples and four home runs in 15 games with the O's.
Beckham hit a leadoff home run off Mariners starter Marco Gonzales in the series finale Wednesday.

Jones gets rare day off
Showalter is taking advantage of the off-day on Thursday to get center fielder Adam Jones some extended time to rest. Jones was out of the starting lineup and Craig Gentry was playing center field in his place.
"He's fine. Just wear and tear," Showalter said. "Nine days in a row. Just trying to give [Jones] the benefit of two days. I knew I was going to do it one day this trip. He's fine."
Jones has played 113 of the Orioles' 120 games this season, and Showalter said he admires the center fielder's durability.
"His durability is amazing to me," Showalter said of Jones, whose last DL stint was in 2009. "I was looking the other day at the games played since he signed his contract -- pretty impressive. Adam's been a rock. You see the stuff where he fouls a ball off his feet, legs, shins. Plays the game. He's a great example for everybody.
"It's one of those things you almost have to take out of his hands. If you ask him, he's always going [to play], but when you get him to almost agree with you, almost, you know it's probably a good idea [to rest him]."
Worth noting
Ryan Flaherty (right shoulder strain) and Anthony Santander (right forearm strain) are set to come off the 60-day disabled list and report to the Orioles on Thursday. They've both completed their rehab assignments in Class A Advanced Frederick, and Baltimore will have to clear two spots on its 25-man roster and one spot on its 40-man roster to activate them. Santander, a Rule 5 Draft selection, needs to be on the 25-man roster or he will be returned to his original club, the Indians.
