Here's the O's player pool for their Spring Breakout game

SARASOTA, Fla. -- The first two editions of Spring Breakout, MLB’s annual prospect showcase held during Spring Training, have brought plenty of exciting moments for Orioles youngsters.

In 2024, Jackson Holliday went head-to-head with Paul Skenes before both made their big league debuts later that year. Enrique Bradfield Jr. flashed the 80-grade speed that makes him one of the most exciting prospects in Baltimore’s system.

In 2025, Bradfield returned and had another impressive showing, one he dedicated, in an emotional postgame moment, to a friend who had recently died. Vance Honeycutt hit an inside-the-park home run and Leondry Arias knocked a walk-off RBI single among a group of standout performances.

On Thursday, the O’s 40-man player pool for their 2026 Spring Breakout game was announced. Catcher Samuel Basallo (MLB Pipeline’s No. 8 overall prospect) and outfielder Dylan Beavers (No. 69) were included, though players in MLB camp competing for roster spots don’t typically participate in Spring Breakout, so it’s unlikely either will play.

Still, there’s no shortage of exciting Orioles prospects who will be on display this year.

What is Spring Breakout?

In 2026, MLB Spring Breakout will again be a four-day event showcasing baseball’s future -- the current stars of Minor League Baseball – in 16 exhibition games played between teams composed of each MLB organization’s top prospects. The third edition will be held from March 19-22 at Grapefruit and Cactus League stadiums during Spring Training.

In 2027, Spring Breakout will be expanded into a single-elimination tournament format, with champions being crowned in both the Grapefruit and Cactus leagues.

When is the Orioles’ game?

O’s and Red Sox prospects will face off on Friday, March 20, at 6:05 p.m. ET at Ed Smith Stadium in Sarasota.

Notable position players

Even if Basallo and Beavers don’t play, the Orioles should still have a Top 100 prospect in action. Outfielder Nate George (No. 93) will have an opportunity to showcase his skills on this platform for the first time after a breakout 2025 season in which he won the organization’s Brooks Robinson Minor League Player of the Year Award.

The 19-year-old George is a toolsy player who climbed three levels in his first pro season.

Among the other top position-player prospects who could participate are 2025 Draft picks Ike Irish (O’s No. 6 prospect) and Wehiwa Aloy (No. 7), as well as infielder Aron Estrada (No. 9), one of the international players in Baltimore’s farm system.

Bradfield (No. 10) could become a three-time Spring Breakout participant, though it’s possible he won’t play after representing Team Panama in the 2026 World Baseball Classic.

Notable pitchers

The O’s system is loaded with intriguing pitching prospects, some of whom have made positive impressions in big league camp this year. Any of Luis De León (O’s No. 4), Trey Gibson (No. 5), Nestor German (No. 12) or Levi Wells (No. 15) could get the Spring Breakout start.

Another exciting hurler who could appear is 18-year-old right-hander Esteban Mejia (O’s No. 8). The Dominican can hit triple digits with a 70-grade fastball that ranks as the best in the system.

Roster details

To accommodate the player movement involved with the World Baseball Classic and to create greater flexibility for clubs and farm directors, Spring Breakout rosters are being constructed in two phases in 2026. Clubs initially submit a preliminary 40-man player pool on Thursday, March 5, which will then be pared down to the official 23-27 man rosters on March 18.

The preliminary 40-man player pools consist of the team’s Top 30 prospects, as determined by MLB Pipeline, minus any injured players, players on a Dominican Summer League roster or players on the 40-man roster who have elected not to participate. The pools also include 10 or more additional unranked prospects submitted by the club to replace the above ranked prospects who are not participating.
