This week's top O's Minor League performers

May 22nd, 2021

With the Orioles' Minor League system now ranked the fifth-best in baseball by MLB Pipeline, it's time to pay attention.

All summer at orioles.com, we’ll be keeping tabs on the top performers from each rung of the Minor League ladder with weekly roundups. Think of it as a way to track the rebuilding process in real time.

Here are the O’s top Minor League performers, plus some additional news items, from the past week:

Brett Cumberland is hitting .315/.393/.519 with three homers over his first 14 games at Triple-A Norfolk. (MiLB)

Triple-A Norfolk

Pitcher: RHP Konner Wade
Prospect ranking: Unranked

A 29-year-old righty, Wade pitched five innings of one-run ball against Jacksonville in his season debut, blanked Charlotte for six innings in his first start, and twirled 4 2/3 innings of scoreless relief on Tuesday against Jacksonville. He’s struck out nine and walked four over his first 15 2/3 innings, pitching to a 0.57 ERA.

Position Player: C Brett Cumberland
Prospect ranking: Unranked

The Orioles catching tandem of Pedro Severino and Chance Sisco isn’t producing much at the big league level, but the backstops at Triple-A are. The best example is Cumberland, who was part of the July 2018 Kevin Gausman trade with the Braves, along with Bruce Zimmermann and Evan Phillips. Cumberland is thriving in his first run at Triple-A, hitting .315/.393/.519 with three homers over his first 14 games.

Additional news: The Orioles on Saturday promoted No. 12 prospect Kyle Bradish to Triple-A, after the right-hander pitched 13 2/3 scoreless innings over his first three starts at Double-A Bowie. Bradish struck out 26 batters and walked just six in those outings.

Also, right-hander Hunter Harvey will make a rehab appearance at Norfolk on Sunday as he works his way back from a strained left oblique suffered in Spring Training. The former first-round pick has yet to appear for the Orioles this season and is eligible to come off the 60-day injured list on June 1.

Southpaw DL Hall fanned 10 in 4 1/3 innings at Altoona in his season debut. (MiLB)

Double-A Bowie

Pitcher: LHP DL Hall
Prospect ranking: No. 57 overall, club No. 4

Did anyone in Minor League Baseball look more dominant in his first two 2021 starts than Hall? The electric lefty whiffed 10 in 4 1/3 innings at Altoona in his season debut, then struck out nine in five scoreless innings against Reading in his second start. Hall took a step backward in his third start, though, allowing five runs in 2 2/3 innings to Reading, while walking four. Hall still owns a 23-to-6 strikeout-to-walk ratio so far this season.

Position Player: C Adley Rutschman
Prospect ranking: No. 2 overall, club No. 1

Rutschman started slowly but is heating up, with two homers and 12 walks in 47 plate appearances over the past 10 days. He owns a .447 OBP over that stretch and hit one titanic home run off his own face on the scoreboard at Prince George's Stadium.

Johnny Rizer owns a .342/.374/.537 line through his first 10 games for Aberdeen. (MiLB)

High-A Aberdeen

Pitcher: RHP Grayson Rodriguez
Prospect ranking: No. 21 overall, club No. 2

The O’s co-Minor League Pitcher of the Year from 2019 is off to another great start in 2021. The latest example came on Friday, when Rodriguez struck out eight in six innings of one-run ball against Wilmington Valley in his fourth start. In four starts this season, Rodriguez owns a 1.47 ERA and 31 strikeouts in 18 1/3 innings.

Position Player: OF Johnny Rizer
Prospect ranking: Unranked

Baltimore’s seventh-round pick in 2019, Rizer quietly hit .308/.365/.456 in his first taste of pro ball, performing well at both Delmarva and Aberdeen in 2019. He’s picked up right where he left off this season, hitting .342/.374/.537 in his first 10 games for the IronBirds. He is currently Aberdeen’s leading hitter.

Delmarva's Gunnar Henderson is hitting .310 with five homers and an .815 OPS in his first 14 games. (MiLB)

Low-A Delmarva

Pitcher: RHP Mike Baumann
Prospect ranking: Club No. 7

Baumann is on a rehab assignment after dealing with a flexor issue last summer and being slow-played this spring. He’s been lights out in two rehab starts at Delmarva, striking out six across five scoreless innings. The plan is for Baumann to advance to Double-A Bowie next and work his way back to Triple-A by the beginning of next month.

Position Player: INF Gunnar Henderson
Prospect ranking: No. 98 overall, club No. 5

The 19-year-old Henderson cracked MLB’s Top 100 prospects this week after getting off to a white-hot start at Delmarva, hitting .310 with five homers and an .815 OPS in his first 14 games. He’s the repeat winner in this space, after hitting .350 with three homers over the past 10 days.
