ARLINGTON -- Orioles Rule 5 Draft pick Anthony Santander and rehabbing infielder Ryan Flaherty were rained out in Double-A Bowie on Friday, but the pair continue to progress toward joining the big league club.
Flaherty was part of the Opening Day roster and is working his way back from a shoulder injury. Santander, who started his rehab Thursday, is a more interesting case as he's yet to make it to the Majors. The Orioles are expected to use the full 20 days of rehab for Santander -- who had right shoulder surgery -- to get a good look at the O's No. 9 prospect, per MLBPipeline.com.
"I've said all along, [he's an] interesting guy," Orioles manager Buck Showalter said of Santander, who served at designated hitter Thursday. "He's one of those guys when you watch a game your eyes are kind of naturally drawn to him. An old scout saying is he fills up the batter's box. I like that statement."
For the Orioles to keep Santander, he has to be added to the Major League roster when his rehab assignment is through. Per the Rule 5 Draft agreements, if a player isn't on the active roster, he has to be offered back to the original club. The O's got to see Santander this spring before he was shut down with a right forearm injury and are intrigued by his bat.

"Any time you invest that much time and effort, the scouting the selection the rehab, you knew you were going to have to rehab the surgery," Showalter said. "And to see the potential you could get a payoff for it, a payback for it, that's always kind of uplifting."
Worth noting
The O's plan on moving up top pitching prospect Hunter Harvey -- their No. 7 overall prospect per MLBPipeline.com -- from the Gulf Coast League to short-season Class A Aberdeen.
Fellow pitching prospect Chris Lee, who pitched in relief in his last outing, will continue to piggyback off Triple-A starter Mike Wright. Lee is Baltimore's No. 21 prospect.
