Padres Acquire INF Garrett Cooper and RHP Sean Reynolds from Marlins

SAN DIEGO – The San Diego Padres have acquired infielder Garrett Cooper and right-handed pitcher Sean Reynolds from the Miami Marlins in exchange left-handed pitcher Ryan Weathers, President of Baseball Operations and General Manager A.J. Preller announced today. To make room on the 40-man roster, outfielder Preston Tucker was designated for assignment.

Cooper, 32, is batting .256 (78-for-305) with 11 doubles, one triple, 13 home runs, 46 RBI and 28 runs scored in 82 games played this season. The 2022 NL All-Star has posted a .348 clip (23-for-66) and a .871 OPS vs. left-handed pitching this season compared to a .230 average (55-for-239) and .682 OPS vs. right-handers, but 11 of his 13 home runs have come against right-handers. He owns a .325/.398/.623 slash line with runners in scoring position with six home runs, including a .333/.404/.667 line with RISP/2 out. The 6-foot-5, 235-pound right-handed hitter has made 51 appearances (50 starts) at first base, posting a .998 fielding percentage (one error, 413 total chances), as well as 26 starts as the designated hitter. Originally selected by the Milwaukee Brewers in the 6th round of the 2013 First-Year Player Draft out of Auburn University, Cooper has posted a .271 average (409-for-1,511) with a .338 OBP, 84 doubles, six triples, 52 home runs, 207 RBI and 172 runs scored across 440 Major League games between the New York Yankees (2017) and Marlins (2018-23). In his 2022 NL All-Star season, he set career highs in games played (119), hits (108), doubles (33) and walks (40) while tying his career high with 50 RBI.

Reynolds, 25, is 3-1 with 12 saves in 17 save opportunities, a 2.77 ERA (15 ER, 48.2 IP) and 54 strikeouts in 38 relief appearances this season between Double-A Pensacola and Triple-A Jacksonville in the Marlins’ system. The 6-foot-8, 250-pound right-hander was originally selected by the Marlins in the 4th-round of the 2016 First-Year Player Draft and owns a 7-3 career minor league record, with 24 saves in 30 save opportunities, a 3.38 ERA (50 ER, 133.0 IP) and 157 strikeouts against 70 walks.
