PHOENIX -- Padres manager Andy Green made the half-hour trek to Peoria on Friday morning for a chance to see about 70 of the team's prospects in action in instructional ball.
Those prospects returned the favor Friday night, when the Padres invited their instructional league players to Chase Field to watch their series opener against the D-backs.
Green was strictly an observer in Peoria on Friday, but he'll address the group Saturday morning.
"I watched some really impressive 16- and 17-year-old athletes take infield and move around the diamond," Green said. "I watched some really good BP, watched drill work. I'll watch some game action tomorrow. It's an exciting breed of athlete that's there."
Many of those prospects will be on full display Oct. 7 when Petco Park plays host to the Padres' futures game, where the club's top prospects will take on the Rangers' best youngsters.
Among the players slated to take part are No. 1 prospectAnderson Espinoza, No. 4 prospect Josh Naylor and No. 5 prospect Cal Quantrill. All three were in attendance at Chase Field on Friday.
As for Green, Friday marked his first chance to see a number of the players acquired by the Padres over the past five months -- whether via trade, the Draft, or the international market.
He made a point to watch Espinoza throw a bullpen session. And he even confused Luis Asuncion for Fernando Tatis Jr. -- only realizing his mistake when he noticed Asuncion's pull tendencies. (Every report Green had read noted Tatis as an "opposite-field power guy.")
"It's my first time seeing those guys and they're all in T-shirts right now, and I didn't have a media guide, so I didn't know who was who," Green said, in his own defense. "But you saw, just in general, the athleticism of the group. It was very impressive."

• Righty reliever Jon Edwards is working out in instructional ball, as he continues to recover from the flexor strain in his right forearm that forced him to miss the entire season. The Padres are hopeful he can throw a few frames in the instructional league to serve as a building block going into next season.
• The Padres still have no clarity on Tyson Ross and Jarred Cosart, who are each undergoing tests -- Ross on his inflamed right shoulder and Cosart on the bone spur in his right elbow. It's unclear whether either injury would require surgery.
• Utility infielder Nick Noonan cleared waivers and opted for free agency, declining an assignment to the Minors. Noonan, who was designated for assignment last week, went 3-for-18 in seven big league games this season.
