PHOENIX -- The D-backs had a chance to jump back into the win column Saturday night after a one-day setback, but relievers Andrew Chafin and Fernando Rodney blew a five-run lead in the ninth inning, and the Padres won, 8-7, at Chase Field.
The 82-60 D-backs have lost two in a row, and have a five-game lead in the race for the National League's top Wild Card spot over the Rockies, who beat the Dodgers, 6-5, on Saturday night at Dodger Stadium.
It was Rodney's sixth blown save of the season and second at home to the Padres. He also took an 8-5 loss to San Diego on April 26.
"It was really cool to come back on a team like them, especially as hot as they've been," Padres first baseman William Myers said. "All year long we've come back in late innings. Whether we won it or not, I feel like it's a great sign. This time we battled back and won against a great team."

Myers had a pair of two-run homers, the second a blast off Chafin in the second at-bat of the ninth to get the comeback started. Rodney was brought in and, after striking out Cory Spangenberg, allowed the next five batters to reach. The tying run came in on Carlos Asuaje's base hit to left and the winning run scored on the same play when left fielder David Peralta overran the ball for an error.
"It was a string of the five best at-bats I've seen all year," Padres manager Andy Green said. "Rodney was making some decent pitches and we were staying on him, hitting the other way. It was a fun one to come back and steal from them, and you knew they were going to make it tough in the ninth inning, because that's what they do."
The D-backs rallied in the bottom of the ninth, but Ketel Marte struck out with the bases loaded against Brad Hand to end the game. Hand earned his 17th save.

"I thought we did everything right until the final inning," D-backs manager Torey Lovullo said. "Unfortunately, it didn't go well for Fernando. They chipped away at him and we've gotta give them some credit. I thought before that, we played a pretty good ballgame."
D-backs' starter Zack Godley threw seven innings and struck out nine as he held the Padres to two runs on four hits.

Goldy contributes: Back in the lineup after missing five games because of inflammation in his right elbow, Paul Goldschmidt had a chip RBI single to left as the D-backs put four on the board against Chacin in the fifth inning. Big Padres ninth: Rodney came in after Myers' homer with none out and no one on base. Jabari Blash extended the rally by working a full-count walk. Austin Hedges followed with a double and Erick Aybar drove in a run with a pinch-hit single. Manuel Margot also singled setting up the big hit by Asuaje. More >

"I thought the second at-bat was a pretty crucial at-bat. I think it was Blash who walked on an eight or nine-pitch at-bat," Lovullo said. "Once that baserunner got on there, I thought they did a good job of taking what Fernando was giving them and staying in the middle of the diamond, and they kept the line moving with some base hits. That's something they've done to him in the past and you've gotta give the team some credit; they had a good plan against him."

Padres starter Jhoulys Chacin is now 4-7 with an 6.98 ERA in 14 starts this season on the road, and 8-3 with a 1.91 ERA in 15 starts at Petco Park. He went 0-1 this season at Chase, allowing 11 earned runs on 15 hits in 11 innings, for a 9.00 ERA.

UNDER REVIEW
When J.D. Martinez smacked a drive into the gap in left-center with one out in the seventh, the Padres challenged second-base umpire Mike Everitt's call that Martinez beat Margot's throw to second. The call was overturned and Martinez was out at second, but credited with a single.

WHAT'S NEXT
Padres: Padres play their last game of the season at Chase Field against the D-backs on Sunday in a 1:10 p.m. PT start. Luis Perdomo (7-9, 4.62) is slated to be on the hill for the Friars.
D-backs: The D-backs will send Robbie Ray (12-5, 2.80) to the hill on Sunday for their series finale with the Padres at 1:10 p.m. MST. Ray racked up 14 strikeouts against the Dodgers in his last start on Sept. 4.
