Padres pluck Clemens off waivers from Fish

June 28th, 2016

SAN DIEGO -- The Padres claimed right-hander Paul Clemens off waivers from the Marlins and transferred righty reliever Jon Edwards to the 60-day disabled list to clear room on the 40-man roster.
In 14 starts with Triple-A New Orleans this season, Clemens went 6-4 with a 4.30 ERA. He was called up to Miami on June 19, and made two starts, allowing seven earned runs in 10 innings.
"He's a guy right now that we believe in the upside of the arm," said Padres manager Andy Green. "There isn't a long track record of success there in him, but it's a big-bodied guy who's started, who's relieved, he's been up to 96 [mph] at times, really can spin a curveball."
Green said that the organization would look for Clemens to increase his usage of the curveball -- similar to what San Diego did with Drew Pomeranz -- and that he would slot into the bullpen initially, with the chance of being a starter if the need arises.
"He's a swing guy," Green said, "provides some length out of the bullpen initially.
"You're trying to look at him, see if there's a way different way for him to attack hitters than he's done in the past, see if you can have him to get some success here."
During three big league seasons, Clemens owns a 5.58 ERA with a 1.56 WHIP in 108 innings. He'll report to San Diego in the next few days, and the Padres will need to make a corresponding roster move before he joins the club.
Edwards, meanwhile, hasn't pitched yet this season and is dealing with a flexor strain in his right elbow. He was shut down in mid-June and won't resume throwing until at least August.
Cashner throws rehab stint
Andrew Cashner threw three innings at Class A Advanced Lake Elsinore Tuesday night, marking his first game back since hitting the disabled list on June 11 with a sprained neck.
Cashner threw 38 pitches and allowed two hits, while striking out one batter. Green had said that Cashner would be limited to three innings and wouldn't throw more than 50 pitches.
In 11 starts with the Padres this season, Cashner has posted a 4.75 ERA with 36 strikeouts and 22 walks.
