Spangenberg cautionary late scratch vs. A's

March 18th, 2017

MESA, Ariz. -- Padres manager Andy Green wanted to get into a game in the outfield, writing his name on the original lineup card for Saturday's game. But just as soon as he wrote it, he had to scratch it off.
With an abundance of caution, Green took Spangenberg out of the lineup because he had received treatment for his hamstring following Friday night's game. Spangenberg told Green he was 100 percent, but Green didn't want to risk it.

"That was my doing more than anybody's," Green said. "He got some treatment on a hamstring last night, and he swears he's fine. Coming off what he was coming off last year, that's the kind of stuff as a manager you can't live with yourself if he goes out there and tweaks a hamstring when he was getting treatment on it the night before."
Green wants to get Spangenberg some time in the outfield to expand his versatility and give him more opportunities for playing time. Spangenberg has a little Major League time in the outfield -- 25 1/3 innings worth in left field in 2014 and 11 innings among all three spots in 2015 -- but has seen most of his playing time at second and third thus far in the Majors.
"I probably would have made the same decision if he was playing second base today," Green said. "This guy hurt his quad three times last year, and his hamstring in his mind is 100 percent, but that's something I just didn't want to push at all."

Worth noting
• The Padres optioned two impressive youngsters to Minor League camp Friday morning, sending right-hander and infielder/outfielder to the other side of the complex. Both had opportunities to shine on the Major League side and both took advantage, Green said.
"Both of them, from my perspective, had outstanding first impressions in big league camp," Green said.
• Right-hander , vying for a spot at the back end of the rotation, had a strong outing at Mesa against the A's, allowing one run on three hits in five innings of work in the Padres' 2-1 loss. He also got his first at-bat of the spring, grounding out in the third inning, as Green looks to start getting his pitchers some time at the plate going forward this spring.
"These guys need to get some at-bats at some point in time, just to get the feel of the bunting and the hitting," he said. "We might send them over to the Minor League side to get them some at-bats, too."
• Catcher wanted to go more than five innings in his return to the field Friday night, but Green said he wanted to draw a "hard line" at five innings. Hedges did just fine while playing for the first time since March 9, having been sidelined with left hamstring tightness.
Meanwhile, (left oblique tightness) is probably a day or two away from getting back in a game, and (left knee soreness) is probably a day or so behind him.
