CHICAGO -- Once again, the San Diego Padres hit a lot of home runs.
And once again, they generated most of their offense through the long ball.
It wasn't enough. Manuel Margot, Allen Cordoba and William Myers each hit solo shots as the Padres struck out 17 times to tie their season high in a 5-4 loss to the Chicago White Sox on Saturday night.
The Padres (14-24) have hit 50 home runs this season to rank fifth in the Majors. More than half of their 137 runs scored have been through home runs (72). They have 15 multi-home run games.
"We don't try to just hit home runs," said Myers, who hit his 10th of the season. "We want to go out there and work good at-bats. Obviously all our runs are coming from home runs, but it's one of those things the more we play, the more we face guys, the more these young guys see these pitchers, the more we're going to get more patient at the plate and get better at that."

The Padres' only other run scored on Myers' sac fly in the fifth with the bases loaded. They finished with three other hits besides the home runs -- two singles by Margot and one from Austin Hedges. The Padres are stressing patience.
"It's learning about that, including myself," Myers said. "I've given away a lot of walks this year, chasing out of the zone. It's one of those things that great hitters control the zone really well and don't go out of it. It's something we're striving for every day. We want to get that point, like all the great hitters in the game, and I really think we will at some point. We have to keep coming in here, working every day to get to that point."
Manager Andy Green noted the batters dealt with tricky shadows during the first couple innings after a 6:11 p.m. CT start time. Padres batters struck out five times in the first two innings.
"It makes for tough visuals for a lot of guys. After that we kind of settled in and had better at-bats," Green said. "But pretty much only the home run for us again today. That's kind of been the story for us from time to time."
Myers tied the game with his one-out solo shot in the eighth. At a projected 453 feet, according to Statcast™, the home run is the Padres' longest this season and tied Myers' longest of the Statcast™ era. The Padres' previous longest was also by Myers at 440 feet on April 20.

The Padres also became the first Major League team to hit a first-pitch, leadoff home run in two straight games since the Chicago Cubs' Alfonso Soriano did so Sept. 19 and 21, 2007.
Margot hit his fourth home run on Dylan Covey's first pitch -- a day after Matthew Szczur also homered on the first pitch of Friday's game. It was just the second time in Padres history they have hit a leadoff home run in two consecutive games, according to Elias. Damian Jackson hit leadoff home runs in games on June 26 and 27, 2005.
"I was really pumped for Manny and obviously for Szczur," Myers said. "That was pretty cool."
