After almost 2 months, Cronenworth returns to Padres

The Padres reinstated infielder from the 7-day concussion IL ahead of Monday night's game against the Cubs.

The club, still searching for answers on the offensive front, has been without Cronenworth since May 5 after he experienced the delayed onset of concussion symptoms stemming from an April 18 hit-by-pitch.

His presence will help to break things up for the club's heavily right-handed lineup, though he scuffled in his first 32 games to start the season, hitting .144/.272/.196 with just three extra-base hits (two doubles and a home run) and four RBIs. That period did, however, include a 4-for-31 (.129) run between the HBP and his IL placement.

Cronenworth went 3-for-12 (.250 average) with one homer and one double over three rehab games with Triple-A El Paso, starting at second base, shortstop and DH.

Also returning for the opener against the Cubs will be rookie right-hander Bradgley Rodriguez, who was optioned to the Minor Leagues on June 19 in order to manage his workload. Rodriguez has been brilliant in 31 appearances for San Diego on the year, pitching to a 2.10 ERA over 34 1/3 innings, with opponents hitting .225 against him.
