DENVER -- Manager Andy Green released the results of Jon Edwards' MRI for his strained right flexor before Friday's series opener with the Rockies, and the news was mixed.
"He doesn't have a tear in his UCL," Green said. "He's got some wear on it. The hope is that [treatment] stabilizes it.
Had it been worse, Tommy John surgery would likely have been the remedy. As it is, Edwards -- who hasn't pitched this season -- could be available by August.
"Jon is going to have a PRP [platelet rich plasma] stem cell injection into his elbow," Green said. "He's going to be shut down for probably eight to 10 weeks as that rehab process begins, and we hope that kind of stabilizes his elbow. The hope is that he's able to pitch by the end of the year.
"The next course of action if this doesn't work is probably surgery. We're very hopeful and optimistic. There's a lot of research that for this type of injury a stem cell PRP injection can be very helpful."
Edwards made 11 relief appearances for the Padres in 2015 after an August trade from the Rangers. He posted a 3.38 ERA over 10 2/3 innings, striking out 16 and walking eight. He was placed on the disabled list on March 25.
