MILWAUKEE -- After using its bullpen to cover 12 innings Saturday, the Padres brought up a fresh arm in Tayron Guerrero and optioned Leonel Campos to Triple-A El Paso.
Guerrero, ranked as San Diego's 13th prospect by MLBPipeline.com, has a 3.60 ERA with seven walks and 11 strikeouts in 10 innings for El Paso this season.
"We need coverage," Padres manager Andy Green said. "He's thrown the ball well in Triple-A. Hopefully he gives us some length today."
Signed by the Padres as a non-drafted free agent out of Colombia in 2009, Guerrero broke out in 2014 when he had a 1.45 ERA in 39 appearances between Class A Fort Wayne and Advanced Class A Lake Elsinore. He carried that success into 2015, posting a 3.05 ERA in 48 games between Double-A San Antonio and El Paso.
The 6-foot-8, 210-pound right-hander has added 40 pounds to his frame since signing with San Diego.
"His fastball is up to 98 [mph]," Green said of the 25-year-old. "It plays aggressively. He's one of those guys you are just going to try to get in the zone to give him some margin for error and let him attack hitters when he's on the mound here."
Campos' second stint with San Diego was a short one, as he was optioned back to Triple-A just one day after being recalled. He provided the Padres with a huge lift Saturday by throwing two scoreless innings to earn his first Major League win in San Diego's 8-7, 12-inning victory.
