SAN DIEGO -- Legendary Padres left-hander Randy Jones was greeted by an outpouring of support from fans and former players alike on Thursday upon the news that he is battling throat cancer.
The 67-year-old Jones -- who was diagnosed in November and began treatment in December -- said he was fortunate to catch the cancer in its early stages, adding, "I'm beating this thing."
"Pulling for you, RJ," fellow Padres great Trevor Hoffman posted on Twitter. "I'm positive you will beat this and looking forward to you joining us in Peoria."

Jones said his goal is to be with the team at its Spring Training complex in Peoria, Ariz., for the final two weeks of camp. He is a constant presence around the team during the season and is hopeful he can return to his regular role with the Padres by Opening Day.
"All the best to our pal, [Randy Jones]," broadcaster and former Padres pitcher Mark Grant wrote on Twitter. "You are in our thoughts and prayers. We love you RJ!"

Added Grant's TV partner, Don Orsillo: "Thoughts and prayers go out to the great Padres Ambassador [Randy Jones]. See you in Peoria my friend."

Jones pitched for the Padres from 1973-80, posting a 3.30 ERA in 264 appearances. He won the National League ERA title in 1975, before leading the league in wins (22), complete games (25) and innings (315 1/3) in 1976 en route to winning the first Cy Young Award in Padres history.
