Machado's homer gives Padres club-record 190

August 26th, 2019

SAN DIEGO -- The Padres entered the 2019 season feeling awfully confident in their power potential. They'd just signed , and they surrounded him with a handful of high-upside young sluggers.

Then 2019 became the year of the home run. The franchise’s single-season record didn't stand a chance.

When Red Sox lefty Brian Johnson hung a first-inning curveball in Sunday's 3-1 victory, Machado demolished it for the Padres' 190th home run this season. That's one more than the previous franchise record set in 2017 -- with 33 games still left to play.

Across the sport, home run totals are soaring this season. Then again, it's possible this group of Padres hitters would've challenged the franchise record anyway. Since they moved to pitcher-friendly Petco Park in 2004, they've never finished higher than 14th in the Majors in homers. This year, they're 12th.

“I don't know how much of it is the environment,” said Padres manager Andy Green. “I know there are home runs everywhere you turn. ... But there's a lot of pop on this team.”

Hunter Renfroe leads the team with 31 dingers. Machado is tied for second with Franmil Reyes, who hit 27 before he was dealt to Cleveland at the Trade Deadline. Fernando Tatis Jr. ranks fourth with 22, even though the 20-year-old rookie has missed 44 games due to injuries.

Seven Padres have gone deep at least 10 times this season. With two more, they'd set a franchise record. Austin Hedges (nine), Francisco Mejia (eight) and Josh Naylor (seven) are all knocking on the door.

Of course, power is only one piece of the offensive equation. The Padres rank only 23rd in on-base percentage. As a result, 117 of their 190 homers have come with the bases empty.

The goal, they’ve said, is to reach base more frequently, making their long-ball potential count for more. They wasted no time on Sunday. Manuel Margot led off the game with a double, and Mejia knocked him in with a single. That set the stage for Machado, who went deep for the first time since July 30 -- ending his longest homerless drought as a Padre.

“Big swing from Manny to set that record,” Green said. “I wouldn't be surprised to see us break it again and again and again.”
