Chacin started the 2016 season with the Braves before being traded to the Angels in May. In 34 appearances between the two teams, 22 of them starts, Chacin went 6-8 with a 4.81 ERA and 119 strikeouts in 144 innings.
Chacin pitched well at the end of the season for the Angels, posting a 0.75 ERA in his final four starts against the Astros (twice), Rangers and Mariners. The 28-year-old has also pitched for the Rockies and D-backs in his eight-year Major League career.
With the Padres' rotation in flux, Chacin will be given every opportunity to compete for a starting job in Spring Training. and have likely secured places in the starting five, but the other three spots remain entirely up for grabs. With that in mind, the Padres would like to sign at least two more big league-caliber arms to compete for rotation jobs during Spring Training.
