SAN DIEGO - The San Diego Padres today announced the club has signed right-handed pitcher Trevor Cahill to a one-year Major League contract for the 2017 season. In addition, the club has designated outfielder Jabari Blash for assignment in order to create room on the 40-man roster. Executive Vice President/General Manager A.J. Preller made the announcement.
Cahill, 28, went 4-4 with a 2.74 ERA (20 ER, 65.2 IP) and 66 strikeouts against 35 walks with a .201 (49-for-244) opponent batting average over 50 games, one start, for the Chicago Cubs in 2016. An American League All-Star in 2010 with the Oakland Athletics, the Oceanside, Calif., native became only the second pitcher since 1990 to record at least 10 wins and 30 starts in each of his first four Major League seasons, 2009-12 (also CC Sabathia, 2001-04). The 6-4, 240-pound right-hander has compiled a career 69-76 record with a 4.05 ERA (517 ER, 1149.1 IP) and 820 strikeouts against 462 walks and a .254 (1097-for-4311) opponent batting average over 262 games, 174 starts, with the Athletics (2009-11), Arizona Diamondbacks (2012-14), Atlanta Braves (2015) and Cubs (2015-16).
 
Blash, 27, made his first career Opening Day roster in his first season with the Padres organization in 2016 and hit .169 (12-for-71) with two doubles, three home runs, five RBI and seven runs scored in 38 games, 16 starts. The right-handed hitter was originally signed by the Mariners as an eighth round selection in the 2010 First-Year Player Draft out of Miami Dade College and was acquired by the Padres from the Oakland Athletics as the player to be named later to complete their December 2, 2015 trade for infielder Yonder Alonso.
