PEORIA, Ariz. -- Wil Myers homered and doubled in the same inning Monday night, sparking an eight-run fourth, as the Padres beat the Reds, 8-5, on Monday night.
Myers tattooed an opposite-field, two-run homer to ignite the rally -- his first long ball of the spring. He would later cap the fourth-inning barrage with a bases-clearing double into the right-field corner.
"It's just one of those things that as Spring Training progresses, you start to find your timing a little better," said Myers, who struggled early in camp. "Couldn't really get worse from where I was at the beginning of Spring Training, but I feel good now. [I'm] just working on some things with [hitting coach Alan Zinter], and they're starting to translate over to the game."

In the top of the frame, Reds first baseman Joey Votto had put the Reds ahead with a moonshot two-run homer onto the right-center field lawn. Votto would knock in another run in the fifth with a sacrifice fly.
"He hit that ball good," Reds manager Bryan Price said of Votto. "He did some good things. He did a nice job jumping on that sacrifice bunt [by Shields]. He's doing a lot of good things. He's playing with a lot of energy. It's always fun to see him get to his power. He just looks good. He looks advanced for this time of spring."

Cincinnati starter Cody Reed cruised through the first three frames, allowing just one hit. But he was roughed up in his second time through the order and was charged with four runs in the fourth. Reed, the club's No. 3 prospect, is in the mix for a rotation spot.

Padres starter James Shields, meanwhile, had a bit of an injury scare in the fifth, when he was struck by a Ray Chang line drive squarely in the left hamstring. Shields -- who was also hit on the foot by a weak ground ball earlier in the game -- said he was fine afterward.

Shields allowed just one hit over his 4 1/3 frames, and the only earned runs he allowed came on Votto's dinger. But he allowed a pair of unearned runs in the fifth -- done in by a pair of walks, a hit batter and a costly fielding error by shortstop Alexei Ramirez.
Along with Myers, Matt Kemp and Christian Bethancourt also had two hits apiece for the Padres.

Left fielder Yorman Rodriguez had a pair of knocks for the Reds, and J.J. Hoover pitched two innings of scoreless relief.
Cincinnati's Beamer Weems drove in Seth Mejias-Brean with an RBI single in the ninth.
Padres up next: Right-hander Andrew Cashner will be on the hill Monday when the Padres face the Rangers at 1:10 p.m. PT in Peoria. Cashner is looking to build on his solid start to Spring Training. He's allowed two earned runs in nine innings and allowed opponents to hit just .233 against him in Cactus League play.
Reds up next:Alfredo Simon will make his debut when the Reds host the Cubs in Goodyear at 4:05 p.m. ET. Simon, who was signed last week to a one-year, $2 million contract that brought him back to the team he pitched for from 2012-'14, is likely to pitch at least two innings and could stretch into the third inning.
