November 27th, 2019

SEATTLE -- Looking to add depth behind third baseman , the Mariners signed free agent infielder to a one-year Major League deal on Wednesday.

Terms of the contract were not disclosed.

The 28-year-old spent last season in the Rangers organization and posted a .240/.332/.513 line with 31 home runs and 74 RBIs in 107 games for Triple-A Nashville. He also played nine games for the Rangers in midseason, batting .154 with a double in 26 at-bats.

Wisdom was a 2012 first-round Draft pick of the Cardinals and made his MLB debut with St. Louis in 2018, batting .260 with four homers and 10 RBIs in 32 games. Most of his Minor League time has come at third base, but he’s also played some first base and outfield.

The Mariners don’t have much Major League-ready depth at third base behind Seager, who missed the first two months of 2019 with a torn tendon in his left hand. filled in for Seager during that time, but he opted for free agency last month after being outrighted to Triple-A as he works back from hip surgery.

Utility man started five games at third base last season as a rookie and and each had one start there, but Wisdom provides a more-experienced option at the hot corner if needed.

Wisdom's addition puts the Mariners' 40-man roster at 39 players, with another expected soon as the club has an agreement in place with former Cubs reliever , but hasn't officially announced that deal yet.
