SCOTTSDALE, Ariz. -- New manager Torey Lovullo had been told that D-backs first baseman Paul Goldschmidt could drive the ball the other way with surprising power, but it wasn't until Friday that he saw it firsthand.
Goldschmidt hit a first-inning homer with the wind blowing in from right field during a 15-3 win over the Dodgers.
"Impressive day for Goldy," Lovullo said. "When he starts to lock it in to the right side and hit balls as hard has he did, he's in a really, really good spot. Hard for me to believe that he drove a ball that far and that hard. It looked like through a pretty stiff wind. But as I was told after he hit the ball that he'll do things like that all year long and I'm pretty excited about that."

Worth noting
• Veteran left-hander Jorge De La Rosa, who was signed to a Minor League contract after camp opened, made his debut Friday and tossed a scoreless inning.
• Reliever Jake Barrett (shoulder) is on an every other day throwing program.
"I'm more amped driving to the ballpark on days I'm throwing," Barrett said.
• Former Navy SEAL David Rutherford spoke to the D-backs on Friday morning.
"He's a pretty special guy," Lovullo said. "It was mostly built around commitment and brotherhood, and I thought the message was perfect for our group of guys with the concepts that are getting thrown on them. He talked about unity. It was a really special message that he delivered to the entire group and I know it spoke to them on a pretty deep level."
• Right-hander Braden Shipley was much improved Friday in his second outing of the spring, tossing 3 1/3 scoreless innings. Last time out, Shipley allowed three runs in 1 2/3 innings.

"These guys are going to get better and better each outing," Lovullo said. "They're going to get their feet under them, they're going to get a feel for the mound, a feel for the strike zone and it's just bound to improve from outing to outing."
