ANAHEIM -- Angels general manager Perry Minasian spoke with the media on Friday, and while the main topic was obviously about the departure of two-way superstar Shohei Ohtani, he gave other updates on the state of the franchise.

Minasian didn’t go into details about the contract negotiations with Ohtani, nor did he say whether the Angels ultimately matched the Dodgers’ offer of 10 years and $700 million, with $680 million deferred.

Here's more from Minasian on a wide variety of topics, including their recent roster moves to sign relievers Adam Cimber and Luis García as well as trade for first baseman Evan White and lefty reliever Tyler Thomas.

On signing García and Cimber:

“We're just trying to improve our depth overall in the bullpen. García is somebody that, from over the last three years to four years just taking the ball, throws strikes with velo, keeps us on the ground. He's competitive against both sides of the plate. … Cimber is a guy who had some health stuff last year, but we feel really good about where he is physically. The previous two to three years before that, he was one of the better relievers in the American League. So somebody that gives you a unique look.”

On if the Angels matched the Dodgers’ offer to Ohtani:

“I understand the question. Just when it comes to negotiations, it’s not something that I make public. I've got a great relationship with [agent] Nez [Balelo], great relationship with Shohei. The organization has a great relationship with both and we congratulate him on this deal and we wish them nothing but the best.”

On why the Angels didn’t trade Ohtani at the Deadline if they didn’t match the offer:

“I'm not gonna talk about negotiations, but with that being said we made a decision at the Trade Deadline. We were playing really good baseball. We definitely had a chance to compete the rest of the way. It didn't work out. There are zero regrets. We felt like we had a really good team. It just didn’t work.”

On the payroll:

“This is a group that wants to win, and what ownership has committed over the years, I think it says that. We're going to make this team better this offseason. It's still early in the sense of a market standpoint and what's available. So we'll continue to have discussions, whether it be free agents or whether it be through trade, and we'll see where the offseason takes us.”

On the trade for White and Thomas:

“I think Evan White we feel really good about. He's healthy for the first time in a long time, which was very attractive. The deal gave us some financial flexibility, which will allow us to pursue some other players. It just made sense with where the roster was and the development of Matt Thaiss and Logan O’Hoppe. We really like those two catchers and they’re definitely two players we'd like to grow with. They made strides over the course of the year defensively.”

On if the Angels are now set at catcher:

“You never say never. Obviously, it depends on what's available and what stands out. We do have flexibility because Matt can play multiple positions. He can catch, he can play third, he can play first. So you never say never, but we’re excited about what we have.”

On the loss of David Fletcher and Max Stassi:

“They both gave everything they had to the organization and we appreciate that. Both players are good human beings, good individuals. Wish them nothing but the best going forward. But it was a deal that we looked at and we thought was the right move to make.”

On how many starters they are looking to add:

“You can never have enough, right? I think it's less about the number and more about who it is and what they bring. And we like the five or six starters that we have. I can tell you from interest from other clubs, that there’s a lot of interest in a lot of our guys, and I think the expectation leaguewide is for a lot of those guys to perform better than they did last year. But if there’s a way to enhance that group we’ll do it.”

On if he plans to replace assistant general manager Alex Tamin:

“We're still working through that. We have a great staff here: David Haynes, Joey Prebynski, John Pratt, Michael Lord, Tim McIlvaine, Matt Swanson, Brian Parker. Everybody's kind of picked up the slack there. With that being said, there is a scenario where we bring somebody on.”
