The Mets' homegrown star and franchise home run leader is going to Baltimore. Pete Alonso and the Orioles have agreed to a five-year, $155 million contract, a source told MLB.com's Mark Feinsand on Wednesday. The team has not confirmed the news.
The Mets never made a formal offer to Alonso, a source told MLB.com's Anthony DiComo, as it became clear to them the bidding was heading to places they weren't interested in going.
Alonso opted out of his contract with the Mets following the World Series, becoming a free agent for the second straight offseason. He was ineligible to receive a qualifying offer this year as he was tendered one in 2024. Thus, there is no Draft pick compensation attached to him, or penalty for signing him.
A Tampa native and University of Florida product who was selected by the Mets in the second round of the 2016 MLB Draft, the first baseman’s first foray into free agency was a drawn-out process that ultimately led him back to New York on a two-year, $54 million deal with an opt-out in mid-February. He would have earned $24 million in the final year of that contract but chose to re-enter free agency after boosting his value in 2025, his age-30 campaign.
Alonso has blasted 264 career dingers, ranking third behind Aaron Judge and Kyle Schwarber in that department while tallying more RBIs (712) than anyone else since his debut year of 2019. Alonso hit 53 home runs that season, setting an MLB rookie record en route to National League Rookie of the Year honors. He’s never recorded fewer than 34 homers in a full season (excluding the shortened 2020 campaign).
With his 253rd career home run this past August, Alonso passed Darryl Strawberry for first on the Mets’ all-time list. He’s also a two-time Home Run Derby champion, winning the contest in 2019 and ’21.
