TORONTO -- Major League Baseball suspended Angels manager Phil Nevin for one game and handed him an undisclosed fine for his actions following Friday’s 4-1 loss to the Blue Jays. Nevin served his suspension on Saturday.

Nevin was frustrated with a call from home-plate umpire Mike Estabrook in the ninth inning. Michael Stefanic, who replaced Shohei Ohtani as a pinch-hitter after he left the game with cramping in both legs, worked a full count against Toronto closer Jordan Romano with the bases loaded and took a pitch that appeared to be off the plate for a called third strike.

Nevin didn’t like the call and voiced his displeasure from the dugout. After Mickey Moniak lined out to end the game, Nevin yelled at Estabrook as the umpire exited the field near the Angels’ dugout and had to be restrained by bench coach Ray Montgomery. Montgomery served as acting manager on Saturday.

Nevin expressed his frustration with the calls from Estabrook after Friday’s loss.

“I explained to him that I thought the pitch to Stefanic was outside, and there were a couple other ones,” Nevin said.
