Phillies Stat of the Day: April 2021

May 1st, 2021

MLB.com is keeping track of a Stat of the Day for the Phillies this season, highlighting a unique, interesting or fun nugget from each game.

April 30: Phillies 2, Mets 1 -- A two-run strikeout?
Chase Anderson struck out swinging with the bases loaded and two outs in the second inning, but a passed ball allowed two runs to score. Elias Sports Bureau said it was the first time the Phillies scored two runs on a strikeout in the expansion era (since 1961).

April 29: Cardinals 4, Phillies 3 (10 innings) -- Realmuto uncorks fire
In the bottom of the third inning, J.T. Realmuto threw out Edmundo Sosa at second base for a third caught stealing for the catcher this season. Realmuto launched the throw at 88.9 mph, making it the hardest tracked throw on a caught-stealing attempt this season and Realmuto's hardest since Statcast's intro in 2015.

April 28: Phillies 5, Cardinals 3 -- McCutchen hits fifth for first time in Phillies uniform
For the first time as a starter in a Phillies uniform, Andrew McCutchen was not hitting in the leadoff spot. In fact, Wednesday night's game was his first career start batting fifth. McCutchen, who drove in the go-ahead run at Busch Stadium, had started only 28 games batting lower than fourth.

April 27: Cardinals 5, Phillies 2 -- Trouble scoring runs
The Phillies have struggled to score runs this season, and it continued in Tuesday's loss to the Cardinals. The Phillies have scored two runs in three consecutive games and have scored two or fewer runs nine times this season. Only the Tigers (12), Rangers (10) and Padres (10) have had more games this season with two runs or fewer.

April 26: Phillies 2, Cardinals 1 -- Wheeler, Waino go deep
Phillies right-hander Zack Wheeler allowed one hit and one run and struck out nine across eight-plus innings. Cardinals right-hander Adam Wainwright pitched nine innings. It was the first game since Aug. 18, 2020, in which two starters each pitched eight or more innings in the same game. The game at Busch Stadium lasted just 2:22.

April 25: Rockies 12, Phillies 2 -- Maton's sizzling start
Phillies rookie Nick Maton went 2-for-3 with one walk. He has hit safely in each of his first six career games and has multiple hits in each of his past four. According to the Elias Sports Bureau, Maton is the third player to have debuted in the modern era (since 1900) to have 11 or more hits through his first six games. All three are Phillies: Art Mahan (12 hits in 1940), Richie Ashburn (11 hits in '48) and Maton.

April 24: Phillies 7, Rockies 5 -- Hoskins hammers HRs
Rhys Hoskins had a two-run home run in the third inning and a three-run home run in the sixth inning. He tied a career-high five RBis in the sixth multi-homer game of his career. It was his first multi-homer game since Sept. 2, 2019, against the Reds at Great American Ball Park.

April 23: Rockies 5, Phillies 4 -- Maton keeps hitting
Nick Maton went 2-for-4 to improve to 7-for-16 (.438) through four career games. He's just the 10th player in Phillies history with at least seven hits in his first four career games -- and the first to do so since Kevin Stocker in 1993. Stocker managed to accomplish the feat despite going 0-for-6 in a 20-inning game in his MLB debut. The last Phillie to tally at least seven hits while starting his career on a four-game hitting streak -- as Maton has done -- was Hall of Famer Richie Ashburn from April 20-23, 1948.

April 21: Phillies 6, Giants 5 -- Moniak's first homer
Mickey Moniak hit his first career home run in the second inning of a 6-5 walk-off victory over the Giants. At 22 years and 343 days old, Moniak became the youngest Phillies center fielder to homer in a game since Mike Anderson on May 2, 1973 (21 years, 314 days).

April 20: Giants 10, Phillies 7 -- Brogdon's scoreless streak ends
Connor Brogdon entered the game with a 15 1/3-inning scoreless streak, the longest by a Phillies reliever since 2018. But then Brogdon allowed a pair of three-run homers in a loss to the Giants to snap it.

April 19: Giants 2, Phillies 0 -- Struggles in center field continue
Mickey Moniak went 0-for-4 with two strikeouts on Monday. The Phillies' starting center fielder hasn't gotten a hit since April 4, and no Philadelphia center fielder has gotten a hit since April 9, the seventh game of the season.

April 18: Phillies 2, Cardinals 0 -- Nola's shutout
Aaron Nola pitched the first shutout of his career, and the first by a Phillies pitcher since Zach Eflin on May 11, 2019, in Kansas City. It was the first shutout with two or fewer hits allowed by a Phillies pitcher since Cole Hamels’ no-hitter on July 25, 2015, against the Cubs at Wrigley Field.

April 17: Cardinals 9, Phillies 4 -- Phils miss Harper's bat
Bryce Harper did not play because of tightness in his lower back. The Phillies missed his presence in the lineup. Harper has homered in 46 games since he joined the Phillies in 2019. They are 32-14 in those games.

April 16: Phillies 9, Cardinals 2 -- Nine up, nine on
The Phillies had nine consecutive batters reach bases via walk, hit or hit by pitch in the second inning against the Cardinals, including a two-run double by Bryce Harper that capped the frame. It is the first time it happened for the club since May 2, 2010, when nine straight reached base in the fourth inning against the Mets: Raul Ibañez, Juan Castro, Carlos Ruiz, Jamie Moyer, Shane Victorino, Placido Polanco, Chase Utley, Ryan Howard and Jayson Werth.

April 14: Mets 5, Phillies 1 -- No knocks for Didi
Didi Gregorius was summoned as a pinch-hitter with runners on the corners with one out in the seventh inning. After initially attempting a bunt to no avail, Gregorius grounded into an inning-ending double play. That was a double-bummer for the Phils and Gregorius, whose 12-game hitting streak dating back to the final game of the 2020 season was snapped. It had been the second-longest active hitting streak in the Majors, behind Orioles outfielder Cedric Mullins' 15-gamer.

April 13: Phils drop twin bill to Mets -- Harper joins Ashburn
Bryce Harper reached base safely in 10 games to start the season before the streak ended in Game 2 of Tuesday's doubleheader. He started the previous two seasons with on-base streaks of 22 games (2020) and 21 games (2019). According to the Elias Sports Bureau, Harper is only the second player in franchise history to start three consecutive seasons with an on-base streak of at least 10 games. The only other Phillie to do so was Richie Ashburn (five straight seasons from 1955-1959).

April 11: Phillies 7, Braves 6 -- That's plenty deep
Alec Bohm scored from third on a controversial play at the plate, when he tagged on Didi Gregorius' 230-foot fly ball to left fielder Marcell Ozuna. It was the Phillies' shallowest sacrifice fly since Statcast began tracking outfield depth in 2015. The second-shortest? Andrew Knapp scored on Nick Williams' 236-foot fly ball to left field at Marlins Park in July 2017. The Marlins' left fielder that day? Ozuna.

April 10: Braves 5, Phillies 4 -- With bases loaded, Gregorius comes through
Didi Gregorius came to the plate with the bases loaded in the first inning and lofted a two-run single to shallow right field off Ian Anderson. Since 2017, Gregorius has 63 RBIs in plate appearances that came with the bases loaded, which is the most in MLB. The stat is even more impressive when considering Gregorius missed half of the '19 season following Tommy John surgery.

April 9: Braves 8, Phillies 1 -- Wheeler's costly mistake
Zack Wheeler allowed a two-run homer to Ronald Acuña Jr. in the fifth inning during an 8-1 loss. The 456-foot blast was the second-longest home run given up by Wheeler, behind only Anthony Rizzo's 462-foot shot off the righty on June 13, 2017. The 114.1 mph exit velocity for Acuña resulted in the hardest-hit homer Wheeler has allowed tracked by Statcast.

April 7: Phillies 8, Mets 2 -- Brogdon earns another 'W'
Phillies right-hander Connor Brogdon has earned wins in three of the Phillies' first six games. He is the first player in Phillies history to win three of the team's first six games in the modern era (1900). He also is just the 13th player in baseball to accomplish the feat and the first since Casey Janssen in 2010.

April 6: Mets 8, Phillies 4 -- Starters impress through first turn
Phillies starters made a solid first turn through the rotation. They posted a combined 2.17 ERA in starts from Aaron Nola, Zack Wheeler, Zach Eflin, Matt Moore and Chase Anderson. In 29 innings, the rotation struck out 31 and allowed 17 hits, seven runs and seven walks.

April 5: Phillies 5, Mets 3 -- Bullpen dominant early
The Phillies' bullpen opened the season with 12 consecutive scoreless innings, which is their longest streak since a 14 1/3-inning scoreless streak from Sept. 26-29, 2019. They did not have a scoreless streak of more than six innings in 2020. Connor Brogdon extended his scoreless-innings streak to 10 2/3 innings, dating to Sept. 13, 2020. It’s the longest by a Phillies reliever since the start of last season.

April 4: Phillies 2, Braves 1 -- Phillies pitching stifles Braves
A year after the Phillies posted a 5.14 ERA and had a historically bad bullpen, the club's pitching staff has shown the makings of a revamped group. Led by starters Aaron Nola, Zack Wheeler and Zach Eflin, the Phillies have allowed three runs so far this year -- none of which have been charged to the 'pen -- tied for their second-fewest through three games of a season since at least 1901:
• 1915: 2 runs
• 2021: 3 runs
• 1970: 3 runs

April 3: Phillies 4, Braves 0 -- Wheeler's big day at the plate
Zack Wheeler hit a two-out single to center field in the fifth inning in Saturday's 4-0 win against the Braves. It was the first RBI by a Phillies pitcher since Vince Velasquez on Aug. 23, 2019. Wheeler then doubled down the left-field line in the sixth to score another run. He is the first Phillies pitcher with multiple hits and multiple RBIs in a game since Ben Lively on Sept. 5, 2017, against the Mets.

April 1: Phillies 3, Braves 2 -- Alvarado hits century mark
Phillies left-hander José Alvarado threw two pitches that topped 100 mph in the eighth inning of the club's 3-2 Opening Day victory over the Braves. The Phils threw a total of one 100 mph pitch in 2019 and '20 combined (Seranthony Domínguez on April 13, 2019).
