Blanco pitches in to spare bullpen

Righty has played seven positions throughout career

June 8th, 2017

ATLANTA -- Seven down, two to go.
Phillies infielder pitched one-third of an inning in Wednesday night's 14-1 loss to the Braves at Turner Field as manager Pete Mackanin tried to save his bullpen for Thursday's series finale and beyond.
Blanco still needs to play catcher and center field to play all nine positions in the big leagues.
Blanco allowed a two-run home run to Matt Adams before getting Tyler Flowers to pop out to end the inning.
"I feel proud," Blanco said.

Blanco, 33, is the first Phillies position player to pitch in a game since Jeff Francoeur threw two innings in a 19-3 loss to the Orioles on June 16, 2015. Coincidentally, Francoeur now works with the Braves' broadcast team and they had him on a split screen as Blanco pitched to Adams.
Blanco's pitches were in the 66-75 mph range. The SunTrust scoreboard called them cutters. MLB Gameday called them knuckleballs.
They were fastballs.
"I'm still alive," he joked, kissing his biceps. "Five more years, baby.
"Since I became a utility [player] I want to have all that experience," he said. "I'll be able to talk to my grandkids, 'Your grandpa played everywhere in the big leagues.'"
