Phillies Minor League review for Aug. 21-27

Player - SS Arquimedes Gamboa, Lakewood Gamboa, 19, batted .440 (11-25) with a double, three home runs, five RBI, two walks, seven runs scored and a 1.304 OPS in six games played. He recorded his first career multi-home run game on Aug. 21, and has recorded multiple hits in five of his last seven contests. Gamboa has hit safely in nine straight games since Aug. 19. He was signed by the Phillies as an amateur free agent on July 17, 2014.
Pitcher - RHP Spencer Howard, Williamsport… The 21-year-old made his lone start of the week on Aug. 23, allowing just one hit in 5.0 scoreless innings. He struck out six batters and walked two. Three of Howard's last four starts have been scoreless, and in those four starts he has allowed only four total hits and struck out 17 batters in 13.0 innings. Howard was selected by the Phillies in the second round of the June 2017 draft.
Lehigh Valley IronPigs - International League North Division…74-60, 3rd place… Lehigh Valley split a four-game series with Syracuse and took two of three from Pawtucket as they finished the week 4-3. The IronPigs are 3.0 games out of the wild card spot with eight team games remaining.
Top hitting performers - OF doubled, clubbed three home runs and drove in seven runs in seven games. He is tied for fourth in the International League with 26 home runs this season… OF batted .313 (5-16) with a home run, three RBI, a walk and a stolen base… 2B Scott Kingery extended his hitting streak to 23 consecutive games before it ended on Aug. 26, setting a new IronPigs franchise record.
Top pitching performers - RHP made two starts, combining to allow just one run in 13.0 innings. He surrendered only one walk and seven hits while striking out nine, and his 2.37 ERA on the season ranks second in the International League… RHP Jose Taveras struck out 14 batters and walked one in 12.0 innings over two starts, yielding only three total runs. Taveras has allowed just six earned runs in 35.0 innings (1.54 ERA) since his promotion to triple-A… LHP Brandon Leibrandt tossed 6.0 shutout innings in his only start of the week, scattering six hits.
Reading Fightin Phils - Eastern League Eastern Division…69-63, 3rd place… The Fightins won each of their two series last week, taking two of three from Bowie and three of four from Harrisburg. Reading has won six of their last eight games.
Top hitting performers OF was 8-for-15 (.533) with a double, two home runs, five RBI, four walks and a pair of three-hit games for Reading… OF Jiandido Tromp batted .375 (12-32) with two doubles, a home run, six RBI and three stolen bases in seven games.
Top pitching performers - RHP Franklyn Kilome made two starts for Reading, combining to allow just three runs (2 ER) on seven hits in 14.0 innings of work… RHP Tyler Viza did not walk a batter in his 6.0 innings of one-run ball during his lone start of the week… LHP Jeff Singer threw 3.0 scoreless innings in relief, allowing just two total baserunners (BB, H).
Clearwater Threshers - Florida State League North Division…27-34, 4th place, 65-66 overall… Clearwater played in just four games last week due to inclement weather, going 2-2, which included a shutout on August 24. The Threshers had four different regularly scheduled or rescheduled games postponed or canceled due to rain.
Top hitting performers - SS Jose Gomez had seven hits in 14 at-bats (.500), drove in three runs and walked twice in four games played… OF Jose Pujols doubled, homered, drove in two and walked twice while batting .364 (4-11). He has three homers in his last seven games… OF Mark Laird batted .353 (6-17) with a triple, three RBI and three runs scored.
Top pitching performers - RHP Seranthony Dominguez made one start, tossing 6.0 shutout innings while allowing only two hits and a walk and striking out six batters… RHP Luke Leftwich had a 3.0-inning relief appearance, during which he struck out six batters and allowed nobody to reach base… RHP struck out three batters in 2.0 perfect innings of relief and now owns a 0.71 ERA (1 ER, 12.2 IP) since joining the Phillies organization.
Lakewood BlueClaws - South Atlantic League Northern Division…29-34, 5th place, 69-64 overall… Lakewood went 4-3, taking two of three games at Hagerstown and Kannapolis after starting the week with a loss against Delmarva on Aug. 21.

He leads the South Atlantic League in home runs (27), RBI (96), slugging percentage (.533), extra-base hits (56) and total bases (227) this season… OF Adam Haseley went 9-for-26 (.346) with three extra-base hits, an RBI, two walks and a team-high eight runs scored in six games.
Top pitching performers - RHP Felix Paulino scattered four hits and one run over 7.0 innings, while striking out nine in his start on Aug. 26. He has posted a 2.08 ERA (6 ER, 26.0 IP) in five games (four starts) during August… RHP Will Hibbs tossed 4.2 scoreless innings with seven strikeouts and converted all three of his save opportunities. He leads the South Atlantic League with 18 saves this season.
Williamsport Crosscutters - New York-Penn League Pinckney Division…30-32, 4th place… The Crosscutters won four of their seven games, including a three-game sweep against Auburn.
Top hitting performers - 3B Cole Stobbe batted .333 (8-24) with two doubles, a triple, a home run, two RBI, three runs scored and a .985 OPS in seven games… OF Josh Stephen slashed .304/.360/.478 with two extra-base hits, four RBI and three runs scored in seven games.
Top pitching performers - RHP Spencer Howard allowed just one hit and two walks over 5.0 scoreless innings, while striking out six to earn his first professional win on Aug. 23. He was named Phillies Minor League Pitcher of the Week… RHP Andrew Brown logged 6.0 shutout innings in his win on Aug. 23. He surrendered four hits and fanned five in his lone start… LHP Kyle Young surrendered two runs and five hits over 5.2 innings with four strikeouts on Aug. 25.    
Gulf Coast League Phillies - Gulf Coast League Northwest Division…34-20, 1st place… The GCL Phillies went 4-2, including a shutout victory on Aug. 22 at the GCL Braves. The GCL Phillies own the highest team batting average (.269) and second-best team ERA (3.00) in the Gulf Coast League this season.
Top hitting performers - OF Ben Pelletier hit .409 (9-22) with three doubles, a triple, two RBI, four runs scored and a 1.071 OPS in six games. Through games of Aug. 27, he ranks third in the Gulf Coast League with a .337 batting average this season… OF Kevin Markham slashed .412/.545/.529 with two doubles, two RBI, five runs scored and four walks in six games.
Top pitching performers - LHP Jhordany Mezquita tossed a career-high 6.0 scoreless innings in his win on Aug. 22. He owns a 0.83 ERA (3 ER, 32.2 IP) with 34 strikeouts in eight starts this season, while holding opponents to a .150 batting average (16-107)… RHP Francisco Morales struck out six and allowed one run over 5.0 innings, earning a victory on Aug. 26.
