BOSTON -- After obtaining a second opinion from Dr. James Andrews, the Phillies announced on Monday that No. 6 prospect would not need surgery on the UCL sprain to his left elbow.
In accord with what the team doctors had originally diagnosed, Andrews viewed the MRI late last week and determined that the injury to the speedy outfielder would be best served by rest, upwards of a month and a half.
"Dr. Andrews read the MRI and he concurred with our team doctor's opinion," said Phillies assistant general manager Scott Proefrock. "He has a left UCL sprain. It will be treated non-operably and we expect it to be a four-to-six week timeframe before he's back."
Quinn, who had hit .274 over 45 games with Triple-A Lehigh Valley, injured the elbow on his non-throwing arm while sliding head first into third base during a game, and he hasn't played since May 28.
The 24-year-old, who has 169 stolen bases over six Minor League seasons, stole five for the Phillies in six September appearances with the club last season.
Philadelphia's second-round selection in the 2011 Draft and the 66th pick overall, Quinn (Port St. Joe High School in Florida) has been sidelined by a variety of injuries throughout his career, with 2014 serving as his high water mark for games played, with 88 with Class A Advanced Clearwater.
