Pipeline preview: Crawford looking to build on momentum

May 26th, 2016

Here's a look at top prospects to watch Friday in Minor League action:
Hitter to watch: J.P. Crawford (Phillies' No. 1) Lehigh Valley vs. Louisville
Crawford, the No. 3 overall prospect, got off to a bit of a slow start when he was promoted to Triple-A, but the young shortstop may be finding his rhythm. After going 3-for-15 over his first five games with the IronPigs, Crawford went 3-for-5 and scored a pair of runs Thursday, generating some momentum that he'd like to build on at 7:05 p.m. ET on MiLB.TV.

Pitcher to watch: Alex Reyes (Cardinals' No. 1) Memphis vs. Las Vegas
Reyes is back and the Cardinals' organization, as well as their fans, couldn't be more thrilled. After receiving a 50-game suspension, Reyes made his first start of the season Sunday and it was clearly evident why he is regarded as the No. 11 prospect in baseball. The 21-year old dazzled his way through four scoreless innings, giving up two hits and striking out eight. Reyes will make his second start of the season tonight at 10:05 on MiLB.TV.

Duel of the day: Sean Newcomb (Braves' No. 2) vs. Austin Brice (Marlins' No. 23) Mississippi vs. Jacksonville 8:00 p.m. ET on MiLB.TV
While Brice has been lights out over his past two starts, Newcomb is looking to harness his command and bounce back from a rough outing. Brice has thrown well all year. The Marlins' prospect has allowed one earned run or fewer in seven of his nine starts this season and threw 5 2/3 scoreless frames in his last outing. Meanwhile, Newcomb walked a season-high six batters in his last start, which lasted just 3 2/3 innings. The outing was a rough one for the 22-year-old left-hander who is likely itching to get back on the mound and erase the memory from that start.
