The Pittsburgh Pirates today acquired right-handed pitcher Camilo Doval (pronounced “kah-MEE-loh “doh VAHL”) and cash considerations from New York (AL), in exchange for minor league catcher Omar Alfonzo and minor league outfielder Luis Cruz.
The 29-year-old Doval went 3-1 with 39 strikeouts over his 44 appearances (39.2ip) with the Yankees this season. Doval, who was acquired by New York from San Francisco on July 31, 2025, went a combined 4-3 with 16 saves, a 3.58 ERA (65.1ip/26er) and 72 strikeouts in 69 games between the teams last season.
He has posted a 1.86 ERA (19.1ip/4er), 17 strikeouts, a .159 batting average against (11-for-69) and a 0.98 WHIP over his 24 road appearances so far this season.
Doval, who had a National League-high-tying 39 saves during an All-Star season with San Francisco in 2023, went a combined 26-18 with 107 saves, a 3.29 ERA (268.0ip/98er) and 332 strikeouts in 275 games with the Giants from 2021-25. He had at least 23 saves in three straight seasons from 2022-24 (89 total saves), making him the first San Francisco pitcher to do that since Brian Wilson (four straight, 2008-11).
The native of Yamasá, Dominican Republic, was one of only eight pitchers in Major League Baseball to make at least 60 appearances during each of the last four seasons (2022-25), along with Scott Barlow, Griffin Jax, Phil Maton, Hoby Milner, Tyler Rogers, Tanner Scott and Gregory Soto.
Doval, who was originally signed by the Giants as a non-drafted free agent on October 28, 2015, has posted a 2.57 ERA (7.0ip/2er), a .192 batting average against (5-for-26) and a 0.71 WHIP in his six career postseason appearances between San Francisco (2021, three games) and New York (2025, three games).
Right-handed pitcher Hunter Stratton has been designated for assignment to make room for Doval on the 40-man roster, which remains full.
Doval will wear uniform No. 75.
