The Pittsburgh Pirates bolstered their bullpen on Monday afternoon, acquiring right-handed pitcher Luke Weaver and cash considerations from New York (NL), in exchange for infielder Sammy Stafura.
The 32-year-old Weaver went 2-1 with one save and a 1.84 ERA (44.0ip/9er), 45 strikeouts, a .162 batting average against (25-for-154) and a 0.82 WHIP in his 42 appearances with the Mets this season. The native of DeLand, Florida, has posted the sixth-lowest batting average against among all Major League relievers (minimum 150 at-bats). Weaver’s 0.40 road ERA (22.2ip/1er) ranks second among all Major League relievers (minimum 20.0 innings), behind only Varland (0.35). His .099 batting average against (7-for-71) versus right-handed hitters is the lowest mark among all Major League relievers (minimum 70 at-bats).
Weaver posted a 0.28 ERA (32.0ip/1er) in his last 30 appearances with the Mets, dating back to May 1.
Weaver, who was originally selected by St. Louis out of Florida State University in the first round (27th overall) of the 2014 First-Year Player Draft, has posted a combined 4.58 ERA (767.0ip/390er) and 791 strikeouts in 312 career regular-season games (106 starts) split between St. Louis (2016-18), Arizona (2019-22), Kansas City (2022), Cincinnati (2023), Seattle (2023), New York-AL (2023-25) and New York-NL (2026).
His 2.90 ERA (192.2ip/62er) over his 168 appearances during the last three seasons (since 2024) is the fifth-lowest mark among all Major League relievers in that time (minimum 190.0 innings pitched), behind only Rogers (2.20), Cade Smith (2.43), Adrian Morejon (2.60) and Tyler Holton (2.83). His 220 strikeouts during that time are tied with Alex Vesia for the ninth-most among all Major League relievers.
Weaver went 1-0 with four saves, a 1.76 ERA (15.1ip/3er), 16 strikeouts, a .163 batting average against (8-for-49) and a 0.65 WHIP across his 12 postseason appearances with the American League-champion Yankees in 2024. He also made three postseason appearances with the Yankees in 2025.
