PITTSBURGH -- The Pirates announced their 2023 Minor League coaching assignments on Wednesday, headlined by new managers in Double-A Altoona and High-A Greensboro.

Callix Crabbe, who managed Greensboro last season, will transition to managing Altoona and become the 14th manager in franchise history. In Crabbe’s place, Robby Hammock, who previously coached for nearly a decade with the D-backs, will join the organization and manage Greensboro.

Additionally, Dallas McPherson will join the organization as the bench coach for Triple-A Indianapolis; Cale Johnson will join the organization as the pitching coach for Double-A Altoona; and Drew Benes, who served as Altoona’s pitching coach in 2021 and 2022, will become Indianapolis’ pitching coach.

Kieran Mattison, who managed Altoona in 2022 and has coached in the Pirates’ Minor League system since 2015, will become the organization’s outfield, baserunning and controlling the run game (CRG) coordinator.

Crabbe, 39, spent one season in the Majors, playing 21 games for the Padres in 2008. The middle infielder spent 10 seasons in the Minor Leagues before transitioning to coaching.

Following his playing days, Crabbe served as the head coach at IMG Academy for several seasons and founded a player development program called “Crabbe-ology.” He then served as the Rangers’ assistant hitting coach from 2019 to 2021 before joining the Pirates’ organization and serving as the Grasshoppers’ manager and assistant hitting coordinator.

With Greensboro, Crabbe worked extensively with catchers Henry Davis and Endy Rodriguez, the organization’s No. 1 and No. 6 prospects, respectively.

Hammock, 45, played in 182 Major League games for the D-backs across six seasons. He primarily caught, but also saw time in left field, right field and third base, as well as a cameo at first base.

Following his playing days, Hammock began his coaching career with Arizona’s Minor League system. In 2012, Hammock served as the hitting coach of the Arizona League Diamondbacks. Hammock managed the Rookie League Missoula Osprey in 2013, High-A Visalia in 2014 and Double-A Mobile in 2015 and 2016.

From 2017 to 2021, Hammock joined the D-backs’ Major League coaching staff as the quality control and catching coach. In 2022, Hammock was with the Padres’ organization and served as the bench coach for Triple-A El Paso. Additionally, Hammock served as the manager for Tigres del Licey during the 2018-19 Dominican League.

McPherson, 42, played 139 games across five Major League seasons with the Angels, Marlins and White Sox. In 2012, McPherson signed a Minor League deal with the Pirates and played 20 games with Indianapolis.

In 2018, McPherson served as the manager of Class-A Short Season Vancouver for the Blue Jays. In 2019, he managed Class A Lansing. McPherson served as a Skill Development Coordinator in 2021 and a Defensive Coordinator in 2022.

Johnson, 35, spent three seasons in the Minor Leagues and one with the Frontier League. Johnson began coaching in 2015, serving as the pitching coach for the GCL Cardinals. Johnson served as the pitching coach for Rookie League Johnson City in 2016 and 2017, then served as the pitching coach for Class A Peoria in 2018 and 2019. In 2020, Johnson served as the Cardinals’ Minor League pitching analyst.

Johnson joined the Braves in 2021, serving as an assistant pitching coordinator as Atlanta defeated Houston in the World Series. In 2022, Johnson served as Atlanta's Minor League pitching strategist.
