PITTSBURGH -- The Pirates received Minor League pitchers Jake Brentz and Pedro Vasquez from the Mariners on Thursday, completing the Aug. 6 trade that sent reliever Arquimedes Caminero to Seattle.
Vasquez, who will turn 21 on Sept. 23, is 5-4 with a 2.26 ERA in 13 appearances, including 12 starts, for the Rookie-level Arizona League Mariners and Class A Clinton this season. The 6-foot-4 right-hander has pitched 71 2/3 innings in his second professional season, allowing 59 hits and nine walks while striking out 52. The Mariners signed Vasquez out of the Dominican Republic in April 2015.
Brentz, who will turn 22 on Sept. 14, has put together a 4-2 record, 5.32 ERA and 1.73 WHIP for short-season Class A Everett, Clinton and Triple-A Tacoma. He has made seven starts and 13 relief appearances, striking out 50 batters while walking 36 and allowing 43 hits in 45 2/3 innings.
In four Minor League seasons, Brentz has posted a 6-7 record and 4.88 ERA over 52 appearances, including 23 starts. An 11th-round pick in the 2013 Draft, Brentz was acquired by the Mariners with left-handers Rob Rasmussen and Nick Wells in exchange for reliever Mark Lowe on July 31, 2015. He was Seattle's No. 26 prospect, according to MLBPipeline.com.
In 13 games with the Mariners, Caminero is 1-1 with a 3.86 ERA, 11 strikeouts and three walks in 14 innings. The hard-throwing right-hander jump-started his big league career in Pittsburgh, going 6-3 with 3.58 ERA over 112 appearances.
Minor matters
• Pirates third baseman Jung Ho Kang, on the 15-day disabled list due to a left shoulder subluxation, officially began a Minor League rehab assignment on Thursday night with Triple-A Indianapolis.
Kang reported to Indianapolis on Monday to continue his rehab workouts. He was in the Indians' starting lineup on Thursday, going 1-for-3 with a home run while batting third and playing third base.
• Top prospect Tyler Glasnow made his first Triple-A start since ending his rehab assignment and rejoining Indianapolis' rotation. Glasnow allowed one run on three hits and four walks while striking out eight over 5 2/3 innings. He threw 86 pitches, including 52 strikes.
• Reliever Zach Phillips, acquired from the Orioles on Wednesday in exchange for Kyle Lobstein, joined Indianapolis' roster and recorded a save behind Glasnow by tossing 1 1/3 scoreless innings.
