Major League Baseball announced today that it has approved a roster substitution for the Boston Red Sox due to an injury sustained by outfielder Roman Anthony. As a result, Anthony will be replaced by Curtis Mead on Boston’s roster vs. New York Yankees in the American League Wild Card Series presented by AbbVie. Dr. Gary Green, MLB’s Medical Director, confirmed the injury after a full review of the medical information.
MLB Postseason rules provide that a Club may request permission from the Commissioner’s Office to replace a player who is unable to play because of an injury. The Commissioner’s Office may approve or disapprove the request based on the specific facts and circumstances. In accordance with the rules, Anthony will be ineligible to return in the American League Division Series presented by Booking.com if the Red Sox participate, but he would be eligible to return for the American League Championship Series if Boston qualifies.
The Wild Card Series presented by AbbVie will be broadcast by NBC, Peacock and NBC Sports Network while ESPN Radio provides live national coverage. MLB Network will air extensive studio coverage throughout the Postseason across the Emmy Award-winning MLB Tonight, the Emmy-nominated MLB Central and MLB Now, and Intentional Talk, MLB Network’s longest-running talk show. Postseason games throughout 2026 will also be telecast in Spanish on Universo and Univision, while Univision Radio will provide Spanish language audio coverage. The 2026 Postseason will be distributed by MLB media rightsholders in 16 different languages to fans in more than 200 countries and territories.
