Houston, Texas — The Texas Rangers announced the following transactions prior to Friday night’s series opener against the Houston Astros at Daikin Park:
- Shortstop Corey Seager activated from 10-day Injured List
- Right-handed pitcher Chase Silseth (#63) reported to the club and added to the active roster
- Right-handed pitcher Luis Curvelo recalled from Triple-A Round Rock
- Infielder Josh Smith optioned to Triple-A Round Rock
- Right-handed pitcher Winston Santos optioned to Triple-A Round Rock
- Left-handed pitcher Marco Gonzales designated for assignment
Seager, 32, missed Texas’ last 23 games while on the 10-day Injured List with lower back inflammation. The shortstop appeared in two games on injury rehabilitation assignment Tuesday and Wednesday with Double-A Frisco, going 1-for-5 with one home run and one walk while converting all 6 of his defensive chances at shortstop. In 51 games for Texas this season, Seager has batted .182 with 10 home runs, 6 doubles, 25 RBI, and 28 walks. Seager’s 50 starts at shortstop for Texas in 2026 still lead the club, as he has posted a .979 fielding percentage (4 E/192 TC). Since 2023, the Rangers are 207-187 (.525) with Seager in the starting lineup and just 97-104 (.483) without him.
Silseth, 26, reports to the club after he and catcher Logan O’Hoppe were acquired by Texas from the Angels on Wednesday in exchange for minor league infielder Angel Arredondo. The right-hander owns a 3-2 record and 2.72 ERA (12 ER/39.2 IP) over 47 relief appearances with the Halos in 2026, posting a 1.412 WHIP and 10.9 strikeouts per 9 innings. He has held opposing batters to a .230/.329/.331/.660 slash with 22 walks against 48 strikeouts, permitting just 3 home runs (0.68 HR/9).
Curvelo, 25, is embarking on his 4th stint with the Rangers in 2026, joining spans from April 5-May 19, June 1-8, and June 11-12. The right-hander has no record and a 7.56 ERA (7 ER/8.1 IP) across 8 relief appearances with Texas. In 7 outings for Triple-A Round Rock in July, Curvelo went 2-0 with a 2.89 ERA (3 ER/9.1 IP) and 11 strikeouts against 3 walks.
The 28-year-old Smith has batted .213 (29-136) in 45 games spanning three stints with Texas this season (Opening Day-June 18, July 1-8, July 25-30), making defensive starts at second base (30), third base (4), leftfield (1), and first base (1). He last appeared on Thursday at Tampa Bay, going 0-for-1 with a walk after entering as a pinch runner in the 4th inning.
Santos was recalled from Round Rock prior to yesterday’s game at Tampa Bay but did not pitch. His Major League debut on July 1 at Cleveland (2.0 IP, 2 R-ER) remains his lone career MLB appearance. The 24-year-old returns to Round Rock where he fashioned a 2.70 ERA (3 ER/10.0 IP) in his most recent 3 appearances (one start) since July 12.
Gonzales, 34, made 2 relief appearances for Texas after having his contract selected from Round Rock on July 21, earning one save while posting a 1.50 ERA (1 ER/6.0 IP) with 4 walks and 3 strikeouts. He last pitched in Thursday’s defeat at Tampa Bay (3.0 IP, 5 H, 1 R-ER, 2 BB, 1 SO, 68 pitches/42 strikes).
With today’s transactions, the Rangers have 39 players on the club’s Major League roster, along with eight players on the 60-day Injured List (RHP’s Carter Baumler and Jose Corniell, LHP’s Jalen Beeks, Cody Bradford, Robert Garcia, and Jordan Montgomery, INF/OF Michael Helman, and C Danny Jansen).
