BOSTON, MA -- The Boston Red Sox today acquired right-handed pitcher Vladimir Gutierrez from the Milwaukee Brewers, in exchange for cash considerations, and optioned him to Triple-A Worcester. To make room on the 40-man roster, the club transferred shortstop Trevor Story to the 60-Day Injured List.

In addition, the Red Sox optioned left-handed pitcher Joe Jacques to Worcester following today’s game against the Cleveland Guardians.

Gutierrez, 28, has pitched in 33 games (30 starts) with the Cincinnati Reds (2021-22) and Miami Marlins (2024), going 10-12 with a 5.47 ERA (94 ER/154.2 IP) and 121 strikeouts. The right-hander made his lone 2024 appearance with the Marlins against the Pittsburgh Pirates on March 31, allowing three runs in 4.0 innings of relief. He was designated for assignment by Miami on April 1 and claimed off waivers by Milwaukee on April 5.

The Cuba native was signed by Cincinnati as a minor league free agent in September 2016. In his 2021 debut season, he earned a third-place vote for the Jackie Robinson National League Rookie of the Year Award after going 9-6 with a 4.74 ERA (60 ER/114.0 IP) and 88 strikeouts in 22 starts for the Reds.

Story, 31, was placed on the 10-Day Injured List on April 6 with a left shoulder dislocation. On April 12, he underwent a successful arthroscopic repair of the posterior labrum, with an open reduction and internal fixation of the fracture of the glenoid rim. The Texas native has batted .265 (892-for-3,368) with 177 home runs and 124 stolen bases in 890 career games with the Colorado Rockies (2016-21) and Red Sox (2022-24).

Jacques, 29, pitched 1.2 innings today against Cleveland, allowing one run on three hits with two strikeouts and one hit batsman. The left-hander has also pitched in four games for Worcester this season, allowing seven runs in 4.0 innings. Originally selected by Pittsburgh in the 33rd round of the 2018 First-Year Player Draft out of Manhattan College, the New Jersey native owns a 5.08 ERA (16 ER/28.1 IP) in 24 career games (one start) with the Red Sox (2023-24).
