Red Sox add infielder Zack Short to active Major League roster

BOSTON, MA—The Boston Red Sox today added infielder Zack Short to the active Major League roster. To make room, Boston optioned infielder Enmanuel Valdez to Triple-A Worcester following last night’s game against the San Francisco Giants.

Short, 28, was designated for assignment by the Mets on April 26 and acquired by the Red Sox yesterday. The right-handed hitter played in 10 games with New York this season, making all three of his starts at third base. Originally selected by the Chicago Cubs in the 17th round of the 2016 First-Year Player Draft, the New York native has batted .172 (68-for-395) with 13 home runs and eight stolen bases in 189 career games with the Detroit Tigers (2021-23) and Mets (2024), making 62 career starts at shortstop, 28 at second base, and 23 at third base. In addition, Short has played 8.0 innings in the outfield and made six pitching appearances. A product of Sacred Heart University, he played for the Brockton Rox of the Futures Collegiate Baseball League in 2014 and the Chatham Anglers of the Cape Cod Baseball League in 2015.

Valdez, 25, has played in 28 games this season, making 26 starts at second base and batting .156 (14-for-90) with 11 RBI. Originally signed by the Houston Astros as an international free agent in July 2015, the Dominican Republic native has batted .224 (51-for-229) with eight home runs and 30 RBI in 77 games with the Red Sox (2023-24).
