Red Sox announce roster moves

BOSTON, MA—The Boston Red Sox today announced the following roster moves:

  • Agreed to a one-year contract with first baseman/designated hitter Dominic Smith and added him to the active Major League roster. He will wear number two.
  • Placed outfielder Masataka Yoshida on the 10-Day Injured List, retroactive to April 29, with a left thumb strain.
  • Designated right-handed pitcher Vladimir Gutierrez for assignment.

Smith, 28, was released yesterday by the Tampa Bay Rays. The left-handed hitter has played in 21 games for Triple-A Durham this season, batting .263 (21-for-80) with three doubles, two home runs, and 11 RBI. Originally selected by the New York Mets in the first round (11th overall) of the 2013 First-Year Player Draft, the California native has hit .248 (440-for-1,771) with 99 doubles, 58 home runs, and 225 RBI in 600 career games with the Mets (2017-22) and Washington Nationals (2023). He finished 13th in National League Most Valuable Player voting in 2020, and in 2023 he recorded career highs in games played (153) and home runs (12).

Yoshida, 30, has played in 24 games this season, making all 20 of his starts as the designated hitter and batting .275 (22-for-80) with three doubles, two home runs, and 11 RBI. Signed by Boston as a free agent in December 2022, the Japan native has hit .287 (177-for-617) with 36 doubles, three triples, 17 home runs, and a .777 OPS in 164 career games with the Red Sox (2023-24).

Gutierrez, 28, was acquired from the Milwaukee Brewers on April 18 and has since pitched in three games with Triple-A Worcester, allowing four runs in 6.0 innings. The right-hander has pitched in 33 career Major League games (30 starts) with the Cincinnati Reds (2021-22) and Miami Marlins (2024), going 10-12 with a 5.47 ERA (94 ER/154.2 IP) and 121 strikeouts.
