Red Sox announce roster moves May 8, 2024

BOSTON, MA—The Boston Red Sox today announced the following roster moves:

  • Reinstated right-handed pitcher Nick Pivetta from the 15-Day Injured List.
  • Reinstated infielder/outfielder Romy Gonzalez from the 10-Day Injured List.
  • Optioned right-handed pitcher Naoyuki Uwasawa to Triple-A Worcester following last night’s game against the Atlanta Braves.
  • Designated infielder Zack Short for assignment.

Boston’s 40-Man Roster is now at 39.

Pivetta, 31, was placed on the Injured List on April 9, retroactive to April 6, with a right elbow flexor strain. The right-hander made one rehab start for Worcester, tossing 3.0 innings on May 2 against Lehigh Valley. The British Columbia native has allowed one run in 11.0 innings over two starts for Boston this season, striking out 13 batters with just one walk.

Gonzalez, 27, was placed on the Injured List on April 13, retroactive to April 11, with a left wrist sprain. The right-handed hitter played in three rehab games with Worcester from May 3-5, going 4-for-11 with three RBI, a walk, and a stolen base while making two starts at second base and one as the designated hitter. The Florida native has played in two games with Boston this season, making one start at shortstop.

Uwasawa, 30, was recalled from Worcester on April 28 and allowed one run in 4.0 innings across two games with Boston, his first Major League experience. Acquired in a minor league trade with the Tampa Bay Rays on March 27, the right-hander has also recorded a 4.80 ERA (8 ER/15.0 IP) in three starts for Worcester this season.

Short, 28, was acquired from the New York Mets on May 1 after being designated for assignment on April 26. The right-handed hitter has played in 12 games this season with the Mets (10 games) and the Red Sox (two games), making four starts at third base and one at second base while going 1-for-16.
