HOUSTON -- His first big league hit wasn't as pretty as he would have liked, but Astros third baseman J.D. Davis is in the books.
Davis, who learned of his callup on Friday night, went 1-for-4 with an infield single and three strikeouts in his Major League debut on Saturday in a 4-3, 10-inning loss to the Blue Jays at Minute Maid Park. He was busy at third base as well, including a dribbler to third off the bat of Jose Bautista to start the game that went for a hit.
"It was a lot of fun," Davis said of his debut. "It was too bad we didn't get a win today, but it was fun, man. It was cool to be back on that side. I've been here for exhibition games, but to actually play a real game, that was pretty cool."

Davis' hit came in his second at-bat, when he hit a grounder in the fifth inning against Marco Estrada into the hole on the left side of the infield. Shortstop Ryan Goins bobbled the ball, but it would have been a tough play anyway and Davis was awarded a hit. He was able to keep the ball.
"I just tried to barrel it up early and I ended up getting a piece of it and I ran as hard as I can down the line," he said. "Thankfully, he bobbled it a little bit and gave me a hit."
Davis, ranked by MLBPipeline.com as the Astros' No. 14 prospect, was told he was coming up, along with catcher Juan Centeno, after Triple-A Fresno's game on Friday. Davis called his parents (his mom screamed), agent, girlfriend and brother, all of whom were on hand to see Davis' big day. 

"I was pretty surprised," Davis said. "I wasn't really expecting to be called up in August, or at least early August. It was an awesome feeling. We had a team meeting and they told Juan he was going up and I was joining right behind him. It was pretty exciting, and I'm happy."
Davis, who began the year at Double-A Corpus Christi, hit five home runs in 16 games at Fresno and has 26 homers overall this season. He spent all of last season at Double-A, hitting .268 with 23 homers, 34 doubles and 81 RBIs.
Davis replaced left-handed-hitting A.J. Reed, who was optioned to Fresno, because the Astros wanted another righty bat to face some upcoming left-handed starters.
