Prospect preview: Mets' Rosario, Smith on display for Las Vegas

April 7th, 2017

Here's a look at top prospects to watch in today's Minor League action:
Hitters to watch: (Mets' No. 1), (No. 2), (9:05 p.m. ET on MiLB.TV)
The Mets' top two prospects each had a pair of hits in their Triple-A debuts on Thursday. Rosario, baseball's No. 4 overall prospect, went 2-for-4 with a stolen base and scored the 51s' lone run in an 8-1 loss to El Paso. The 21-year-old, signed by the Mets in 2012, hit .267 in 30 Spring Training at-bats after hitting .324 across two levels in the Minors in 2016.
Smith also went 2-for-4 and had one of two Las Vegas extra-base hits -- a double. The No. 61 overall prospect was impressive at Double-A Binghamton last season, hitting .302 with 14 homers and 91 RBIs. Smith notched four hits in 36 Spring Training at-bats.

Pitcher to watch: Sean Reid-Foley (Blue Jays' No. 2)
Speaking of Double-A debuts, Reid-Foley is set to make his for New Hampshire after the Fisher Cats' season opener was postponed on Thursday. Ranked as MLBPipeline.com's No. 62 overall prospect, Reid-Foley split the 2016 season between Class A Lansing and Class A Advanced Dunedin, going 10-5 with a 2.81 ERA and a 130-38 strikeout-to-walk ratio in 115 1/3 innings (21 starts).

Duel of the day: (Braves' No. 5) vs. (Rays' No. 8) Gwinnett vs. Durham (7:05 p.m. ET on MiLB.TV)
Newcomb, No. 77 on the Top 100 Prospects list, flashed his potential in his final Spring Training outing on March 8, allowing one hit with four strikeouts in two scoreless innings against the Phillies. The 23-year-old southpaw will attempt to build on that performance when he takes the mound for Gwinnett in his Triple-A debut.

Hu, meanwhile, has made one Triple-A spot start in each of the past two seasons, though this will be his first extended stay at the highest level of the Minor Leagues. In 24 starts for Double-A Montgomery last season, the 23-year-old right-hander recorded a 2.59 ERA and 107 strikeouts in 142 2/3 innings.
