'Am I hallucinating, or is that a rabbit?' in SF

April 23rd, 2021

The stands at Oracle Park became the hop corner on Thursday night when a pair of fans brought something you don't see every day around a Major League ballpark.

During Austin Slater's at-bat in the bottom of the second inning, the camera panned into the crowd, where a bow-tie-wearing rabbit was shown cradled in the arms of a Giants fan. The rabbit looked perfectly content in its perch, though it seemed more focused on being fed than the baseball happening on the field.

"Am I hallucinating or did I just see a rabbit?" Giants play-by-play announcer Duane Kuiper said.

The rabbit's name is Alex the Great, and he is a 4 1/2-month-old therapy rabbit, according to AP reporter Janie McCauley. His owner, Kei Kato, lost her restaurant during the pandemic.

Alex, who was attending his very first Giants game, even has his own Instagram account, which posted an adorable photo of him at the park earlier Thursday.

First the Coors Field cat, now the Oracle Park rabbit. Which creature will appear at a ballpark near you next?
