KANSAS CITY -- With rain pouring throughout the day at Kauffman Stadium on Monday, the Red Sox had their series opener against the Royals postponed until Wednesday, when they will play a day-night doubleheader.
The clubs had already been scheduled to play at 2:15 p.m. ET on getaway day, so the makeup came will be played at 8:15 p.m. on Wednesday.
Red Sox manager John Farrell will start Rick Porcello (Monday's scheduled starter) on Tuesday. Knuckleballer Steven Wright will stay in line for his matinee start on Wednesday. David Price, originally scheduled to pitch Tuesday, will start the night game on Wednesday.
The main way this impacts Boston's rotation is that the club had planned on not needing a fifth starter this week due to team off-days on Thursday and again on Monday of next week.
But with Porcello now pitching Tuesday instead of Monday, Farrell needs a starter for Saturday's home game against the Indians.
Right-hander Joe Kelly is a top candidate, as he will be on track to pitch Saturday after making a third Minor League rehab start for Triple-A Pawtucket on Monday.
"Obviously, it lines up on time, but we haven't gotten to that point to name anyone or anything, so we've got a few things to look at first," said Farrell.
Kelly has been on the disabled list since April 20 due to a right shoulder impingement.
The Red Sox would like left-hander Eduardo Rodriguez to stay at Pawtucket for at least one more start, as he tries to regain some velocity in his comeback from a patella subluxation in his right knee.
Sean O'Sullivan, who pitched two turns in Boston's rotation last week, was designated for assignment on Monday.
