Texas Rangers outfielder Nomar Mazara has been named the American League Rookie of the Month for May, it was announced today on MLB Network. He has now won the award in each of this season's first two months.
Mazara becomes the first Texas rookie ever to win the award twice, and he is the first player to take honors in consecutive months in either league since the White Sox' Jose Abreu in June and July of 2014. The last rookie to win the award in April and May was Atlanta's Evan Gattis in 2013, and Mazara is the first to do it in the American League since Tampa Bay's Rocco Baldelli in 2003. Baldelli and Ichiro Suzuki (2001) are the only other A.L. rookies to win in April and May since the award was introduced in 2001. 
 
Mazara batted .283 (30-106) with 7 home runs and 17 RBI over 27 games in May, leading all major league rookies in RBI and home runs (tied with Dodgers' Corey Seager). His team-high 7 home runs were the most for a Texas rookie in a month since July 2008 (Chris Davis-8) and set a club record for rookie long balls in May. He led all American League rookies in batting average and on-base percentage (.319), ranking second in slugging (.491) and OPS (.809) among players with 50-or-more plate appearances. Mazara also led A.L. rookies in total bases (52), hits (30), extra-base hits (8), and runs (12).
 
Mazara has 52 hits this season, the second-highest total of any Texas batter over his first 45 career games (Bump Wills-53 in 1977).
 
Since the start of 2013, the Rangers have had rookies win the monthly award 5 times, most of any major league club in that span. This marks the second straight year for a Texas player to win the A.L.'s rookie award in May, as Delino DeShields took the honors in May 2015.
