Stubbs opts out, given release by Rangers

March 29th, 2016

SURPRISE, Ariz. -- Veteran outfielder Drew Stubbs has exercised the out clause in his contract and been granted his release by the Rangers.
That leaves Justin Ruggiano and Ryan Rua as the two reserve outfielders still in camp. Both could make the team if the Rangers go with a four-man bench.
Stubbs was signed at the beginning of Spring Training for depth in center field and to give the Rangers speed off the bench. He hit .300 for the spring but struck out 14 times in 40 at-bats.
The Rangers feel comfortable moving Ian Desmond to center field if Delino DeShields needs a day off, allowing either Rua or Ruggiano to play left field.
