ARLINGTON -- The Rangers have added to their infield depth by signing veteran Pedro Ciriaco to a Minor League contract with an invitation to Spring Training. Ciriaco will compete with Hanser Alberto for a spot as a utility infielder.
Ciriaco, a right-handed hitter, played in 84 games for the Braves last season and hit .261 with one home run and 15 RBIs. Over parts of six seasons in the Majors, Ciriaco has 649 plate appearances with a career batting average of .268, 32 doubles, seven triples, five home runs, 51 RBIs, 35 stolen bases, a .294 on-base percentage and a .368 slugging percentage.
Ciriaco has played all four infield and all three outfield positions in his career. He has played 74 games at third, 60 at shortstop, 41 at second, three at first, five in left, three in center and two in right.
• Pitcher Colby Lewis has not yet completed a physical exam to go with the one-year, $6 million contract he agreed to with the Rangers last month. An official announcement is pending the physical and will likely happen next week.
• Ben Baroody, who has spent seven years with Major League Baseball and was senior director for baseball development and youth academies, has been hired as an assistant in the Rangers' amateur scouting department.
• Former Rangers pitching coach Mark Connor is returning to the organization as a special assistant. Conner briefly considered retirement before agreeing to return.
• Pirates manager Clint Hurdle will present Jeff Banister with his American League Manager of the Year Award at the Texas Rangers Dr Pepper Awards Dinner on Jan. 22 at the Gaylord Texan Resort in Grapevine, Texas. Hurdle was the Rangers' hitting coach in 2010 before becoming the Pirates' manager. Banister was Hurdle's bench coach for four years before being hired by the Rangers.
